“I’m sorry, Lisa. I was just as guilty.”

“Yes, you were, but I’m ready to move on. I forgive you, Ryan.”

“Thanks.”

“Goodbye. Have fun at your apartment.”

He laughed and said goodbye, happy that he’d made peace with Lisa. The sign for Babylon hung over the road, and he took the exit. The day was his. He checked the time. After working on the tape, he had a conference call at ten o’clock and then would work with Tiffany on the next episode.

First, he’d run into Organic Bonanza for groceries. While he drove through town, the familiar surroundings made Ryan smile. His mind was made up that he would commute for a while. Maybe he’d string Jolene along so he could stay there from time to time, but nothing permanent.

There weren’t any familiar cars in the parking lot of the grocery store, and that made him sad. He remembered times not that far in the past when he’d run into half the people he knew in Babylon. If she was working, he’d stop by the deli and say hi to Sister Mary, Pam’s sister. She was always a good source of gossip and information.

Grabbing a cart, he went through the automatic doors, a whoosh of fragrant buttercream frosting blowing back at him. The bakery was at the front of the store, so he loaded up on goodies. Then he got out his phone and sent Lisa a text.

I’m shopping to feed the children after school if you’ll allow it.

Pie, cookies, eclairs, and his favorite chocolate cake. He’d take it to Lisa’s if she wouldn’t let the kids come over.

Walking up and down the aisles stirred his memory and his appetite. Soon his cart was full. More food than a single guy would eat in a month.

“Whoa!”

He looked up to see a beautiful blond woman’s cart nose to nose with his.

“Kassandra!”

“What are you doing here? I thought you moved to New York.”

“I have an apartment here. Going to work from home today, so I’m stocking up in case my kids can visit.”

“Aw, that’s so nice.”

“What are you doing?” he asked, interested.

“I just signed a year’s lease on an office and exam room in that medical building next to the hospital.”

“Oh, wow, so you’re going to practice down here.”

“Just consultation and referral. No more surgery.”

“How’s Tony?”

“He’s good. I hear he’s good.”

“What did I miss?” Ryan asked, concerned.

“Do you want to have coffee?”

He looked at his watch. There was plenty of time before his meeting. “I’d love coffee. It’s not as good as what you can get across the street, but I don’t want to see Alison.”

“Oh, right. All the players. I’m learning slowly who they are.”

They walked side by side, chatting like old friends, to the café in the store.

“This is so weird,” Ryan said, chuckling as he ordered their coffee.

“What?”
