Ryan and Betsy were in bed, looking at their phones, when his beeped. “It looks like my mother-in-law is having a tantrum.”

“What’s wrong?”

“She goes through these cycles where she feels taken advantage of, so she shuts everyone out at the last minute.”

“Did you just say she was buying you the house at the beach?”

“Yeah, but this is different. Canceling Thanksgiving dinner a week before? She’s fishing for something.”

“You can come to my house,” Betsy said.

“Wait. Something will come up.”

Kassandra had just come in from a run when she got the message. The opportunity to host a big holiday meal was exactly what she needed, so she replied to everyone.

I’d be honored to do it this year if the chance is still open. Probably because of all the little ones, an early dinner would be preferable. Am I right? So how about dinner at one? Then naps can be taken. You all know the size of my house. The dining table will easily fit twenty people. The tweens can have their own table if that’s the routine. All I’ll need is highchairs and booster chairs! I’m so excited! Thank you! Kassandra

Pam read the text and tried not to sneer. Of course Kassandra would come up with a solution fifteen seconds after Pam canceled. Pam had been hoping for a bit of drama, for calls begging her to reconsider. Not one. Not even Lisa or Ryan, asking what was wrong.

“Kassandra is going to do it. Thanksgiving dinner.”

“Kassandra?” Dan asked, frowning.

“You know, Andy’s brother’s girlfriend.”

“I thought they broke up.”

“It doesn’t seem to be fazing her at all. Oh well, we could always go to Florida to see your sister.”

“No way.” Dan reached over to feel her forehead for a fever, and she slapped his hand off. “I’m staying here. I’ll order dinner in if you don’t want to go over there. I get it. The house, memories…”

“I have zero memories in that house. You have no worries about that. I can’t even remember what Senator Charles Monroe looks like.”

“Good, because he might be the one ex you have that I’m jealous of.”

“Dan, get real. The moment he gave me the engagement ring, he not only lost interest in me, he was impotent.”

“Yikes, too much information!”

“Since when have we had a problem with jealousy?” Pam asked. “My God, Dan, you slept with everyone on the block and then some. Get over it.”

Snorting, Dan finally relaxed, laughing. He grabbed her and kissed her passionately. “I’m sorry. Believe it or not, I do have some insecurities in our relationship.”

“Why? I’m here around the clock.”

“You won’t marry me, for one thing.”

“Get over it, for God’s sake.” She stood up. “I’m getting a snack. You want something?”

“What’s on the menu?”

“Cheese and crackers, that kind of stuff.”

“Yes. I’ll have a snack. So, no one else commented on your text?”

“Not a word after Kassandra.”

Sandra and Andy were debating the wisdom of going to Kassandra’s for Thanksgiving.
