“Are you living in the city?”

“No. I’m in Babylon.”

“Ah. I’m in Great Neck. So, plan on talking more tonight. I’ll have my assistant along to take notes.”

“Thank you, sir.”

As soon as he could, Ryan called Lisa and told her the news. “You’re the first person I called.”

She asked all the appropriate questions, making him jot down ideas to present to Warren, including money.

“Ryan, that’s amazing. It’s such an honor to represent our father, too. But why did you call me?”

“Huh?”

“Why didn’t you call Betsy?” Lisa asked.

“Oh. I didn’t even think of her, to tell you the truth. You’re Jack’s daughter, so I guess I called my sister first.”

“I can see that. And I’m happy to know what’s happening for you. We’ll have to celebrate when you get back. You, Alison, Pam, and me.”

“I’m glad you’re my sister. I wish I would have kept it at that.”

Lisa gasped. “Oh, Ryan. I know. But let’s not regret the years we had together. We have those beautiful babies. Our breakup is tough enough without having regrets, too.”

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it like that. I just meant that it would have been so much easier.”

“My whole life would have been easier if I had stayed in Oahu after college,” she said. “Look, congratulations, that’s great. Now call your girlfriend and tell her.”

“I will. Have a good night, Lisa.”

“Bye, Ryan.”

Lisa laid her head on the back of the couch with her hands across her little growing belly. Sincere happiness for Ryan didn’t diminish her determination that he would not find out about the pregnancy.

Her phone beeped again. It was Zach. “I’m out front. Do you want to get a bite to eat?”

“I’ll go out. Both nannies are here.”

In a minute, he was at the door. “Wow, you look beautiful.”

“I do? Thanks. I feel like I’m perpetually pregnant.”

“It suits you. I don’t think I’ve ever said that to a woman before, but you’re wearing this well. You look healthy and happy. A few days ago, I was concerned…”

“Why?”

“You were so thin.”

“I feel like a pig.”

“Stop. You’re glowing. The baby daddy might notice something’s up. That’s a concern.”

“It won’t make a difference. He called earlier about a job offer he got from the head of PBS production. He’s so preoccupied with that, I don’t think he’ll notice much else on Thanksgiving.”

“Do you feel like dancing?”

“I’d love to dance.”
