“I’d sue the pants off that group if it was true,” Kassandra replied.

Andy and Sandra were at the door with daughter Bella and son Brent, putting an end to the conversation.

“This is so nice,” Andy said. “You guys will fit right into this group. Tony, you’ll love the men here. We’ll have a party as soon as you move.”

“We’re staying the weekend,” Tony replied. “Dad’s already moved out, and we have our suitcases. The place is furnished. There’s even beer in the fridge.”

“I’ll run to the store for provisions,” Kassandra said. She eyed Bella, who had demanded to be let down so she could explore. “I’m itching to pick up that little girl. What do you think?”

“I’ll let her know,” Sandra said. “She refused to wear her hearing aids today.”

Sandra went to her daughter, who was barely three and deaf with limited vision as well, and signed in American Sign Language,Can Aunt Kassie pick you up?

Bella turned to the adults and said in a clear voice, “Not yet.”

“Okay, she’s spoken,” Kassandra said, waving to her.

“Sorry,” Sandra said.

“Don’t be. I can’t wait to get pregnant. I threw the pills away already. Now I just wait.”

“You’re really serious about this, aren’t you?”

“Completely. It’s what I want more than anything in the world. The house being available feels intentional. Likedon't miss out on this opportunity. It won't happen again.”

Sandra looked around at the house. “Our cottage could fit in the kitchen and living room.”

“It’s not that small,” Andy said, snickering.

“It is. But I’m okay with it. We’re going to have to expand.” She whispered, “We have a live-in nanny, and that makes it feel even smaller.”

“We’ll have to have help, too,” Kassandra said.

“Pam’s house manager will hook you up,” Sandra said. “Her name is Hocus, and she knows all the nannies.”

“Hocus makes my skin crawl,” Igor said.

“Why?” Tony asked. “That’s weird.”

“She reads palms. She’s black and has these piercing blue eyes.”

“Does she? I never noticed her eyes,” Andy said. “Now I’ll have to make a point of looking.”

“Don’t let her touch you,” Igor warned, his voice going up an octave. “She’ll read your mind.”

“Dad, are you okay?” Andy asked, looking at his brother with wide eyes. “It’s not like you to be superstitious.”

“I think Hocus had a lot to do with Pam breaking up with me.”

“Dad, that’s ridiculous,” Tony said.

“It’s not. I don’t want to go into it now, but there was something strange going on over there. You know her mother died right in that house with people home, and no one knew until the next morning. I went over there to see Pam, and she wouldn’t let me go into the den because her mother wassleepingin there.”

“Dad, I didn’t realize that,” Andy said, looking shocked. “I mean that you went there that evening.”

“Yes, well, I didn’t want to cast suspicion. Maybe I should have, though.”

“Please don’t,” Kassandra said. “I don’t want trouble with the neighbors before we’ve even moved in.”
