“Save it for Betsy, Ryan. Reassure her. I like her and think she’s good for the kids.”

“She’s really great with the kids.”

“Okay, now you know.”

“Who else knows?”

“My mother.”

“That’s probably why the house purchase…”

“Partly, I’m sure. But we can pretend it’s not yours if that would work for you.”

“No way. Is it moving?”

“It is.”

“You’re far enough along to know the sex.”

“I haven’t been to the doctor yet, Ryan.”

“Why the hell not?”

“Because the only doctor I could see was Steve, and no way was that going to happen. I have an appointment next week. I’m fine.”

“I’m just getting off the highway. I’ll take Betsy to dinner tonight. Hopefully, some pampering will help with the shock.”

A wave of warmth floated over Lisa, a combination of sadness and relief. Ryan was finally becoming a man. “That’s a great idea. Let her know she can help me raise this kid. I told her you guys should have one now, like we did with the other neighbors when Sierra and Madelyn were born.”

“That was fun.”

“There you go! I’m going to say goodbye now. Nothing needs to change between us.”

“For your information, we’re flying to Virginia next Monday for a week for work.”

“Well, I’ll see you Sunday for your housewarming,” she replied.

They said goodbye, and Lisa quickly ended the call.

Sitting on the terrace, she thought about her life for a moment, and how totally out of her control it might appear to others. Did she care? No. But she’d call Alison and tell her she was pregnant, and then text the town criers, who seemed to be Laura and Sandra.

Alison was in disbelief. “How are you going to do it?”

“I don’t know. Why don’t you and Max have one? Since we’re populating the beach, we should do it together.”

“I’m pretty tired,” Alison said.

“Aw, I’m sorry. You work so hard. You need another nanny.”

“Nah, Fredericka is a gem. I complain about her, but she does double time.”

“I’m going to text the others now,” Lisa said.

“Ugh. Don’t let them badger you.”

“I’m sending them a text, that’s it.”

After saying goodbye, she sent a group text to Sandra, Laura, and Julie.
