“I’m taking it hour by hour if I have to. I kept asking myself, what would the Virgin Mary do?”

“And what would she do?” Alison asked, dubious.

“She’d pray. She’d do something kind for someone. I made Nancy a cup of tea last night when I was ready to jump out of my skin. I got on my knees and prayed for guidance.”

“Lisa, this Mary BS has me worried. You’re not going to go all religious on me, are you?”

“Alison, I have to do what I need to to get through this and not go off the deep end. Praying to Mary is helping. It won’t affect you at all.”

Lisa didn’t remind her sister that duringhermany breakups, she’d made horrible mistakes, getting involved with any available man, including Dave from Organic Bonanza, who had turned out to be gay.

“Well, I’m sorry,” Alison apologized. “That’s all I can think of to say. We lost our brother, too.”

“You didn’t lose him, Alison. Stay in a relationship with him. Just don’t expect me to hang around.”

“So, you’re making me pick sides,” Alison said.

“You’re damn right I am. At least right now. Max already told everyone you both were choosing me. Everyone else is going to do it, too. Why would you choose Ryan over me?” Lisa asked, upset. “You never talk to the guy.”

“I have one of his kids,” Alison said, pointing to the stroller.

“And when’s the last time he saw Morgan? He said he was going to see her when he showed up at my house the other day. Did he?”

“No.”

“Okay, well, there you have it.” Lisa’s voice quivered as she spoke. “Choose to side with an irresponsible playboy, or someone who has your kids in her house five days out of seven.”

“Lisa—”

“No! I don’t want to hear about Ryan, okay? You got your wish, and he’s out of my life.”

“Lisa, I never wanted that.”

“You tried to sabotage us in the past. I forgave you. Now I’m telling you what I want, and it’s not negotiable. Choose me or him.”

They were in front of Lisa’s cottage. Morgan watched her mother and aunt. Alison saw it, and it made an impact. She embraced Lisa.

“I choose you, of course, sister. I’m sorry I wavered. I’m scared for my daughter.” She nodded toward Morgan.

“He can take her when he takes my girls. Megan doesn’t want to see him at his place. Marcus is so upset, he’s going to be the one that I have most concern for. Daniela will go with the girls. Since he’s sitting on his ass around the clock, I’m not sure why he needs to wait until the weekend.” Lisa put her finger up. “As a matter of fact, I’ll send him a text that on Wednesday he can take all three girls. My big kids will be in school.”

“I still have my two little ones with no father. Max wants to adopt them, but that means I have to marry him.” Alison sputtered, laughing.

Lisa scoffed. “Marry him, Alison. Max is great. What are you worried about? You finally have a decent guy who loves you and wants you. Go for it.”

“Thank you, Lisa. I think I’m dragging my feet because I jump into these things so fast. Max is also working out some issues that have arisen.”

“The cross-dressing?”

“Yes.”

“That’s minor, Alison. Max has been around long enough. Just do it.”

“Okay, I’ll take it under advisement. I’d better get these babies inside. I feel snow in the air.”

“Oh, ugh. I’m sick of winter already, and it hasn’t even started.”

“What are you going to do for the holidays now?” Alison asked softly.
