“So, newly separated.”

“We weren’t legally married.”

“Gotcha. Walking wounded?”

“No, I’ve never been better. I haven’t worked for a while and knew it was time to return to theland of the living[SH5].”

“So, what’s next for you?”

“I’m looking for a place in the city. The commute to Babylon is too much to do five days a week.”

“I have a spare room I’ll rent you. My roommate moved out last week, and the rent is too high for me to do alone. It’s three blocks from here. I have several interested parties, but they’re strangers.”

Frowning, Ryan shook his head in dismay. “I could be a serial killer. Why would you ask me to move in with you and we just met?”

Tiffany laughed. “I’m sure Peter will vouch for you, and if I get killed, you’ll be the first one they look at.”

“Okay, it’s a deal.”

Ryan held out his hand, and they shook on it.

“This might be too easy,” he said. “Everything is falling into place. I feel like I should be punished or something for leaving my family.”

“Sometimes it’s better for a family to disband if it’s getting toxic. They might do well without you.”

“That was a kick to the gut.”

“Well, I’m sorry, but you should be happy if they are truly doing well.”

“I guess you’re right. So, when can I move in?”

“Tonight,” she said. “Do you have a bag packed?”

“No, but I’ll get one together after work and come back later.”

They high fived.

“Deal!”

Chapter 6

After the last day of a week of commuting, Kassandra Coeur had one mission, and that was to end the life she and Tony had lived in the Hamptons. She cleared out her office of the few things left. After a quick stop at the drugstore, she headed to their condo, where she filled her car with the last of her belongings. Tony had been there daily, cleaning and staging it for sale. She felt a sense of overwhelming relief that the end of this part of their journey was in sight.

Driving to Babylon felt predetermined, like this was destined for her. And when she pulled into the driveway of her ridiculously palatial mansion, she knew she was home.

“Home!”

Tony came out to greet her, pulling on a hunting jacket that she’d never seen before.

“Grizzly Adams!”

“You’re mixing me up with that doctor down the street,” he called out, laughing. He glanced in the back seat. “Wow, your car is full.”

“You did such a great job cleaning up the condo. I wanted to get all my junk out of there so you can call the real estate agent.”

“Done. I’ll get this stuff in the garage. Go inside. I made dinner.”

“I feel like a queen.”
