“That could be a fire hazard.”

“Well, fix it,” she said, laughing.

“I’m on my way.”

She heard a car door slam outside. Blowing out the candle, she kissed her fingertips and placed them on the picture of Mary. It was ridiculous, but it made her feel better, and anything that made her feel good she’d do as often as possible.

Before the nannies could get there, she opened the door and led Zach back to her bedroom.

“I know it will seem forward, but my nanny, the one who got hurt, is staying on the sun porch, so that means the living room is off limits. I’m not ready to let the family know what’s going on yet.”

“Gotcha. It’s not forward at all.” He looked around the small, neat bedroom that had a loveseat under a window facing the sea. “This is nice. Relaxing.”

“I tried to make it a sanctuary, but obviously it wasn’t enough since Ryan said he was suffocating.”

“His loss is my gain.”

“Sit! Can I get you anything to drink?”

“What do you have?”

“Alcoholic or non?”

“I’ll keep it non, since you can’t drink.”

“Thanks. I’m doing a ton of iced herbal tea.”

Barking out a laugh, Zach smiled. “Okay, what about ice water?”

“What? You don’t like my herbal tea?”

“I don’t think so.”

Lisa giggled. “Okay, sit down, and I’ll be right back.”

Out in the kitchen, there was no sound coming from the big girls’ room, where Nancy was going to sleep, and it looked like Daniela had settled in for the night on the daybed in the sun porch. There was a tap on the door. A familiar, handsome but scowling face looked through the window at her.

“Dan! What the hell.” She opened the door. “What do you want?”

“Are you dating someone already?”

“That’s none of your business.”

“Julie told your mother that Alan Stone told her—”

“Dan, go home,” Lisa said, closing the door.

He hissed through the crack before she closed it completely, “There’s a county car parked in front of your house. Is that the guy’s car?”

“Goodbye!”

She closed the door and pulled the shade down.

Taking the bottles of water and herbal iced tea, Lisa went back to her room.

“Alan Stone strikes again. He is telling everyone and their brother that we’re dating.”

“Ugh. Lisa, I’m so sorry. What can I do?” Zach asked.
