“No, she’ll stay away as long as there are kids to watch,” Lisa said, snickering.

“Why are you reaching out?” Julie asked, suspicious.

“Wewant you here. All the little girls are waiting.”

“Okay, if you’re sure,” Julie replied.

“I’m more than sure.”

“What about Sandra?” Julie asked.

“She’s not here. This is impromptu.”

“Okay. I’ll come. By the way, you sound good for having a recent breakup.”

“I’m great,” Lisa said. “Come see for yourself.”

She ended the call after they chatted for a few more moments.

“I’d better tell Dan,” she told Laura. “Can you keep an eye on these two?”

Lisa grabbed a jacket and ran out onto the sand.

“Dan! Just an FYI, Julie is on her way.”

“How’d that happen?” he asked, jumping in the air to catch a ball.

“Hocus told me what happened with my mother forgetting, so I called her. You should see your daughter, Dan.”

“This is a lot for you, isn’t it?”

This was the Dan Lisa dreaded, the one whose look could mean eitherI’m concerned for youorI remember what you look like naked. She glanced down at the sand, avoiding his gaze.

“No. It’s fine. Everyone usually comes on Sunday, and this weekend it’s today. All’s well.”

“Is it hard without Ryan, though?” Dan asked.

“No, Dan, it’s much easier. Thank you so much for helping today. Don’t worry about me.”

She ran back inside. Alison had arrived, and her girls joined the others, who were in the sunroom playing.

“It’s early, but I need wine. Do you have anything?” Alison asked.

“I have wine,” Lisa said, wondering how she’d get around not drinking without them figuring out why. She just wouldn’t say anything about it. A glass with an inch of wine would be a great decoy.

“So, how is it without Ryan lurking around?” Alison asked.

“It’s fine. We’re all getting used to the peace.”

“You look great. You must be sleeping better.”

“Like the dead,” Lisa said.

A knock on the door interrupted the conversation.

“Julie,” Laura said.

“I’ll get it,” Alison said, going to the door.
