“Why are you so cool?” he asked.

“I really don’t know. Should I kick you out of my house because you had a fling with Janine? How would that benefit me? Unless you plan on continuing to see her, I don’t see what good it would do to keep harping on it.”

Her phone beeped. “It’s a text from Sandra, inviting me to visit with all the women at Lisa’s cottage. You’re welcome to join the men playing football on the beach.”

“We can go,” Tony said.

A half hour later, they arrived at Lisa’s cottage. Max was busy building a bonfire for them to warm up. Tony joined the men and children on the beach to throw a football around, and Kassandra walked to the side door alone. She heard female voices in more of a debating tone than laughter. Frowning, she hesitated. Sandra had mentioned before that some players were more like oil and water and to expect anything.

A statuesque black lady answered the door. Kassandra noticed right away the piercing blue eyes.

“You must be Hocus!”

Pushing the door open, Hocus smiled at Kassandra, who took one step into her waiting arms.

“Oh, my, you are pregnant with life,” Hocus whispered.

“You can tell?”

“With just one touch, my dear. Come in out of the cold.”

“I’m Igor Roman’s son’s girlfriend. Kassandra.”

“I know who you are. That horrible man,” Hocus said, shuddering.

Kassandra bit her lip to keep from laughing for Tony’s sake. “He has his moments, for sure.”

“Where’s your partner?” Hocus asked, curious about Tony.

“Out on the beach with the menfolk.”

“Hmmm,” Hocus said, but didn’t say more. She touched Kassandra’s shoulders. “Let me take your coat. You have the same gifts the ancient Greeks gave your namesake.”

“You mean Kassandra, the priestess. Her gifts were twisted. I’m afraid I don’t have any ESP.”

“I warn you, that group in there has been arguing about an incident that took place fifteen years or more ago. Pam—you know Pam, right? Igor’s former girlfriend? She found a baby skeleton in a vacant cottage that Laura had just purchased, and it turned out to be the baby of her son and a girl named Ginger Harrow.”

A wave of disbelief passed over Kassandra.

“Oh, ugh. Tony’s brother, Andy, was married to Ginger Harrow. I knew her well.”

“I forgot that tidbit,” Hocus said. “Yes, indeed. So you have more connection to the story. Anyway, gird your loins.”

Hocus took her arm and led her into the living room.

“You have another guest!” Hocus said. “Kassandra, do you want something to drink?”

“I’ll take coffee if it’s not too much trouble.”

“No trouble at all.” Hocus whispered something to Lisa, who nodded.

“Kassie, this is Laura, Julie, and Alison,” Sandra said.

“What were you doing on this beautiful but freezing day?” Lisa asked.

“Well, I guess I’ll just come out and say it. We shopped for baby furniture!”

Congratulations rang out for Kassandra.
