“Kassandra?”

“It’s me.”

“Come up.” Sandra stood, waiting for Kassandra. “What are you doing out? It’s freezing.”

“I escaped. You got a minute?” Kassandra asked.

“I’ve got all night if you need it.” She pulled a deck chair over. “Sit.”

“This is nice. I wanted to do this someday, and here I am.”

“We’ll do it all the time if you need to. What did you think of our little soiree this afternoon?”

“It was weird, sorry. Why were they bashing Ginger? No offense. I know she was your predecessor.”

“Do you know the story?” Sandra asked.

“Only what was shared with Tony. And the hodgepodge about the baby skeleton.”

“When she was a young girl, maybe seventeen, she had an affair with both Brent Smith and his father, Jack.”

“Sandra, no way.”

“It was perverse. I might as well fess up that I also had an affair with Jack. The day he died, the hospital called me before they called Pam. We had just been together the night before. We rarely spent the night together, so it was special. Well, not that special. Why am I going off on this tangent? You asked about Ginger.”

“Why were they were bashing her,” Kassandra said.

“Right. Ginger was innocent. She might have even been drugged.”

“Sandra, how awful. What makes you say that?”

She looked over her shoulder. “Do you want to take a walk? I need to unload, and I don’t want to be overheard.”

“Of course.”

“Will Tony worry if you’re gone too long?”

“Tony’s on my shit list right now, so don’t worry about him.”

“Oh, ugh.” Sandra got out her phone. “I’ll send Andy a text to let him know. He’s in Lisa’s attic, helping Max finish a conversion. Max is Alison’s boyfriend. The nanny is here, watching TV with the boys. I have Lisa’s kids tonight.”

They walked down to the surf and headed north.

“You talk first. Why is Tony on your shit list?” Sandra asked.

“I’m still in shock,” Kassandra said. “I didn’t think I’d ever tell anyone because my pride took a hit.”

She told Sandra the details she knew about Tony and Janine, how he’d tried to end it and Janine had called Kassandra to get revenge.

“I’m so sorry. I never figured Tony for a cheater.”

“Me either! I was completely blindsided.”

“And you just found out you're pregnant, too.”

“Yep, all of that, all at once. I’m pissed! I didn’t really feel it until I left Lisa’s today. She mentioned Ryan leaving when I saw her last week, and honestly, she seems great despite it. Suddenly, I wanted details from Tony. Of course, that never helps, but I still wanted them.”

Kassandra talked about her feelings—her fears that their relationship wasn’t as meaningful as she had led herself to believe.
