The women hugged each other.

“I don’t even know what time it is,” Kassandra said.

“It’s just nine. My nanny showed up out of the blue, and Megan wanted to come home from Alison’s, so here we are!”

“Let’s keep going,” Kassandra said. “I love this. And it’s nice to have someone to run with me.”

“I’ll come when Mom can’t,” Megan said.

“Perfect. I need a running buddy.”

“I’ve seen Tony run on the beach with Andy. Can you get him to go if we’re not around?” Lisa asked.

“Tony and I are separated,” Kassandra said, pursing her lips.

“Kassandra, no way.”

“Mom,” Megan warned. “That’s not nice.”

“She knows what I mean.”

“I do,” Kassandra said.

“Well, I’m really sorry,” Lisa said, nodding toward Megan.

Kassandra mouthed, “Later.”

“Marriages are too hard,” Megan said.

“Neither of us are married, though,” Lisa said.

“Okay, well, shows you what I know,” Megan said, snickering.

“You’re only ten,” Kassandra said. “How’d you get so sophisticated?”

“Exposure,” she said, deadpan, making Lisa laugh.

“I recently apologized to her for exposing her to all my husbands and boyfriends,” Lisa said. “I promised her not to do that anymore. But I’m not sure how long I’ll last alone.”

“Because you’ve never been,” Megan reminded her. “You might like it.”

“I’ve only been alone for twelve hours, and I love it,” Kassandra said. “By the way, are we getting together today?”

“Yes. Come to my house,” Lisa answered. “Sandra wanted to have it, but my place is bigger, and I have more rugrats than she does. It’s just easier for me to have it.”

They passed Pam’s house.

“It never looks like anyone is home anymore,” Megan said.

“They are cozy inside, hiding from the world,” Lisa replied.

“What was it like before Dan moved in?” Kassandra asked.

“We were always there. Everyone was. A couple of years ago, we started meeting at my house weekly, but she still has the holiday parties. I’m not sure yet about this year. If she invites Ryan, I’m not sure we’re going.”

“Oh, Lisa, I’m so sorry.”

“It’s okay. He’s a mess.”
