I need to get to the hospital and work everything out from there.

I get in around eight o’clock. Taylor and Emmerson are waiting for me at the airport.

I called Taylor on the way and told him what had happened before I boarded the plane. Leaving out the part about Maddison for now, but Em might already know.

I’m sure in the last five hours on the plane, Maddie has filled her in on what a jerk I am.

Still, she gives me a hug and says nothing about that. Taylor follows and pats me on the back.

“I hope you’re okay, man,” he says. “This can’t be easy.”

I shake my head. “I’m still in shock,” I tell them, knowing I need to check my cell and turn it off flight mode. I’m almost scared to do that in case there’s been a disturbing update, but the only missed calls I have are from my worried mom.

I text her to let her know I landed and I’ll talk to her in the morning. It’s late in Florida.

“Do you know anything new?” Em asks as we grab my luggage and make our way to their car.

I shake my head. Hoping that no news is good news.

Surely, they would have tried to call me again if something bad had happened.

We make our way to the hospital in relative silence.

For the life of me, I just can’t seem to make conversation right now.

When we arrive at the emergency room, we’re quickly informed my dad is in intensive care.

I don’t even know if I’m prepared for it, but I have to be.

I’ve always hated hospitals, and there’s just so much going on around us.

I feel like my head is going to fly off my shoulders.

I’m missing Maddie already. I know she would have made things better.

Her warmth would have coated me like a warm blanket. I’m sure, in hindsight, it would have helped me to face what I’m about to see.

I’m a fucking idiot.

Doctor Parsons meets me at reception, and we shake hands while Em and Taylor hang behind.

“How’s he doing?” I immediately ask.

The doc looks grave, to say the least. “He’s hanging in there, but the injuries he sustained are very serious, Ashton. You need to be prepared for the worst.”

“What are the extent of his injuries?” There was only so much they would tell me on the phone.

“He had a lot of internal bleeding. He’d lost a lot of blood when he came in. Several broken bones. We don’t yet know the extent of any head injuries. He is in a coma, and we have him stabilized.”

I swallow hearing that.A fucking coma? “Has anyone else been to see him?”

“His assistant was here earlier.”

So fucking Genevieve is the only one who’s even bothered to come and see what’s going on, and he’s been here all day?

I don’t see any of his business partners and directors around now.

Are we the only two who even care about his welfare?
