I laugh, loving that he seems a little better today; there’s a small spark in his eyes when he smiles. I think he’s really looking forward to the hockey game.

“Well, I think I could get used to it, too.”

“I’ll make you breakfast in bed every day if you stay a little longer,” he says.

I giggle. “And my boss will come and hunt me down.”

He grins. We haven’t exactly worked out the finer details of our newfound love yet. I didn’t want to pile any more on him while he has so much on his plate.

“Besides, didn’t you give me breakfast in bed this morning?”

He chuckles now, his shoulders shaking from the movement. “I guess I did.”

“Hot sausage is my favorite.”

“I’ll remember that,” he muses.

We tuck into our breakfast and then fool around in the shower before we have to get ready to head to the stadium.

“Do you think you’re ever going to come to some understanding with your Mom?” I ask him when he shuts the water off.

“Babe, I’m practically still in you. Can we talk about this when we’re not naked?”

“I’m sorry. I just hate to see all this angst. It’s such a hard situation.”

“I just need time.”

“I totally get that.”

“I also need to get to the stadium,” he says, kissing me chastely. Clearly, not wanting to talk about it.

“Mind if I wear your jersey?” I ask, shaking my tush as we dry ourselves off.

He grins, giving me a slap on my bare ass. “As long as you don’t have underwear on.”

I giggle. “Out in public?”

“Hmm.” He thinks for a moment. “On second thoughts, maybe save that for when we get home.”

“You know I’ll be wet just watching you, knowing what you’re going to do to me later.”

He grins, licking his lips. “That’s the best thought in the world, baby.” He kisses me on my forehead and grows seriousfor a moment. “I can’t thank you enough for being here. I know it’s been a lot this week. You’ve been my rock, Mads.”

I reach up to kiss him. “Anything for you, Ashton. I love you.”

“I love you, too.”

CHAPTER 27

Ashton

Everything else literally seems a million miles away, the minute I’m on the ice.

And that’s a good thing because I need to concentrate. I can't afford to be distracted for even a moment when I'm out here because a lapse on the ice can have serious consequences.

Overthinking and distraction only slow a player down, and that’s not what anybody wants. I’m known for anticipating passes and being able to cut them off with my speed. I’m an expert at anticipating the play. It’s not a new thing to generate offense from the blue line; it’s been done before, but I have recently caused a stir with the way I manipulate wingers.

The commentators praised my skating ability, hockey IQ, and skill set during the Stanley Cup. Calling it “River’s creativity with his skating,” the commentary notably followed my fast moves. “Watch how the wingers panic when he gets the puck,” one commentator said.
