He looks up just as the server brings over his coffee and thanks him.

“Did you want anything else?” he asks me before the server leaves.

“No thanks, I’m good.”

I can feel the side of his thigh pressing into my leg. I suck my bottom lip in, trying to contain myself. It’s growing harder and harder to concentrate by the second.

He leans forward with his elbow on the table.

“Do I make you nervous?” he asks, a smile in his voice.

“You make me a little nervous,” I admit, glancing up at him.

His dark eyes blaze. I felt the electricity between us long before I saw it.

He leans closer to me, his lips at my ear. “Truth is, you make me a little nervous, too.”

His voice reverberates in a way I’ve never had a man do. I don’t know what it is, but I feel it all the way to my core.

He sips his coffee as he watches me carefully.

“How could little old me make a guy like you nervous?”

He chuckles and shakes his head. “What’s a guy like me?”

I indicate with my hand from his face down to the seat between us. I don’t even mean to insinuate what he has between his legs, but he grins regardless.

“Ashton Rivers in the flesh,” I tell him. Like he doesn’t know.

He seems to find this amusing. “Ashton Rivers in the flesh?” he repeats.

“You are a celebrity.” I shrug.

“Hardly.”

“People are looking over at us.”

“Because I’m sitting with an exquisite woman, that’s why.”

I shake my head. “No, that isn’t it.”

“The fame thing isn’t really a big deal here. Hardly anyone knows me.” He shrugs.

I know that isn’t true. The server did a double-take when he brought the coffee over. Ashton looks like someone important. If you didn’t even know who he was, you could tell that part at least.

I also dig the fact he isn’t bothered at all by it, nor does he seem to have an inflated ego because of who he is. I keep forgetting he’s an NHL superstar with a legion of fans across America.

“How long before the auction?”

I check my watch. “An hour. I got here super early.”

“Wanna go for a walk or something when we’ve finished this?”

I nod. “Yeah, I’d love to. I think I need some air.”

“Are you nervous about it?”

“Yeah, kind of. My clients have their hopes pinned on this house. It’s always awkward in this situation if we don’t achieve what we want.”
