She giggles, swatting my hand away.

I lean down to her ear. “You afraid we’re gonna get caught?” I ask huskily.

I know that’s gotta turn her on. I already am, just seeing her here and the flush on her face from the game, the excitement, and the ice. Maybe even a little for me, too.

“I guess I am,” she giggles.

“Wait and see what I got in store for you later then.”

I let go so she can make of that whatever she wants as she turns to give her friends a little smile. I step out into the hallway as they step forward.

“Elle, Wren, this is Ashton.”

They both look up at me. I guess I’m used to that, being so tall.

Elle sticks her hand straight out, bobbing up and down on her feet excitedly. Clearly a hockey fan, she looks like she knows a bit more about the game than Maddison does.

That thought makes me smile.

“Hey!” she enthuses. “Great game. You guys were awesome!”

“Thanks. Nice to meet you.” I nod at both of them.

I shake Wren’s hand in turn.

They both stare up at me, seemingly lost for words. I chuckle.

“What are you girls up to now?” I ask.

They all look amongst themselves.

“Cindy was talking about a couple of drinks to celebrate?” Maddison offers.

“Sounds good. You all in?” I look at her friends and then at Maddison. Cindy is already saying something I can’t make out to Tyler behind us.

“Definitely in,” Wren says.

“Me too!” Elle smiles.

“I’ll get changed first,” I tell Maddie.

“Wren and I might grab a quick bite,” Elle says. “We can meet up with you and Ash in a bit?”

“Sounds good,” Maddie nods. “I think Cindy said there’s a wine bar around the corner. I’ll text you the name?”

“Wait a minute, you guys don’t want to meet the other players?” I say, with a laugh in my voice. “We’re all coming out to the players’ lounge soon to meet some of the backstage crew and VIPs.”

Both of their eyes bug wide. "My boyfriend is going to be so bummed," Wren says, unable to contain her excitement. “Wait, does that mean we’re VIPs?”

“Sure does.” I nod. “You enter at your own risk.”

Elle is just about jumping up and down on the spot, and I can’t help but laugh.

I don’t bother changing yet. I escort them down to the players’ lounge myself, and we spend the next half hour mingling.

When Elle and Wren make a break for it, I decide that now is as good a time as any to have a moment with Maddie after we’ve seen the girls out.

“You were so great with that kid,” she tells me when I walk back to the locker room to get my stuff, holding her hand as we walk.
