I smiled. ‘He said he loved me and gave me a necklace last night.’

‘What? Really? Show me!’ Her eyes were almost bulging out of her face as her mouth dropped open.

‘Oh, I will soon. Right now, I want to just be a couch potato. I’m so tired. But it was an opal one. It looks so expensive, and I can’t believe he gave it to me.’

‘You’re worth it, babe.’ She shoved the last slice of pizza into her sauce-rimmed mouth.

‘Thanks, Deb. I really want him to be worth it.’

Gifts were one way to get Deb interested. If you were generous, she instantly valued you. She had been like that since adolescence. I always looked for compatibility and a deeper connection, which was hard to find, but to me, a deep conversation was better than any gift you could buy. And that’s not to say that I wanted to date a stinge, of course, but I didn’t need to be showered with gifts to fall for someone.

My phone vibrated, and I looked at my text messages – one from Seb, and one from Mum.

The first text I opened was Mum’s, which told me how much she and Carlos missed me and asked me over for a roast the next night, which sounded great. I always looked forward to my family catch-ups once a week. We set a time for 6pm, and then I opened Seb’s message:

Seb:Hey babe, can I come over tonight? Xo

Me:I am about to go to sleep. We will catch up Tuesday xo.

Seb:Why Tuesday? You know I leave Wednesday : ( .

Me:I’m spending the day with Deb, then I’ve got dinner at my Mum’s house. Anyway, I’m off to bed, night x.

My phone vibrated again, but I was too tired to read the message.

Retail Therapy

We slept in until 11am, then spent until noon getting glammed up. Deb and I decided we’d go to Sunshine Plaza in Maroochydore for some retail therapy. It was the biggest shopping centre on the Sunshine Coast and boasted over three hundred stores. I drove as usual, and when we arrived thirty-five minutes later, I people-watched to see if anyone was leaving the multi-storeyed car park.Yes!!!I thought as the blue hatchback began to reverse out of the only spare space in sight.

Once I parked, we strolled side by side towards the shopping centre with grins on our faces, feeling mighty fabulous. My hair was out and blowing in the gentle breeze that swept through the car park, and I wore a black wrap dress with my Doc Martin boots. Deb wore a floral dress that fell just above her knee-high, caramel boots. Her cleavage was on show, jiggling with each step she took. Genetically blessed with great boobs and silky hair. Not fair.

‘Naomi, do I look hot or what?’ she asked while she twirled to face me. ‘I always feel my best in my hooker boots.’ She let out a cackle.

‘You look great, Deb. I love that dress on you.’ I gave her a smile of reassurance.

She looked me up and down. ‘I know you can’t dress like this for work, but, boy, if Sebastian saw you now, he’d be all over you like a fly to a light. Matte-red lippy was made for your plump lips.’

‘Ha. Thanks, sugar, but as I said last night … I’m still not ready for that yet.’ I kept close to the parked cars as Deb walked ahead of me.

She did a double-take to face me. ‘Why? I seriously don’t get what’s taking you so long. He’s sooooo good-looking, you know, with his whole bad-boy thing.’

‘Yes, he indeed is good-looking and reminds me of that by telling me that any other woman would be with him by now.’ I scoffed at that statement and continued to walk.

‘Well, it’s kind of true. He’sdamnfine.’

‘Uh-huh.’And she wonders why I won’t have sex with him straight away. His tactic of telling me any other woman ‘would have him by now’ isn’t something that works for me, clearly. If anything, it plays on my insecurities more. I’ll do it when I want to …

‘Just think about how big he’d be. I reckon he would be massive. He’d make you moan all night.’ Deb’s voice was sensual and passionate.

I rolled my eyes at her persistence. Did she not get the hint I wasn’t ready to sleep with Seb yet? ‘Okay, enough graphics, babe. We’re in public, and I want to focus on a fun day out together.’ I smiled, hoping she’d change the subject.

‘Whatever. I know you secretly love it.’ She poked her tongue against her cheek, doing the blowjob sign, and moved her fist from side to side.

‘Enough now. Just stop.’ I laughed and gestured to the sliding doors.

We walked through the doors, went up two escalators, then turned left and kept walking until we reached the glowing lights of Mecca Cosmetica.
