‘Thank you again, both of you, for this opportunity.’

‘You earned it. Patrick has always had a knack for picking the right person.’ She raised her strawberry-blonde eyebrows at Patrick and gave a closed-lip smile.

I nodded my thank you to her.

‘Alright, well, I’ll let you sort out your shifts, and I’ll see you in the next few days.’

‘Okay. See you then.’ I lifted my hand in an awkward wave.

She nodded and shut the door.

As I turned around to face Patrick, my heart fluttered, and my neck went hot as our eyes met. He stared at me for a moment, then flashed his white teeth. I smiled a goofy smile back and hoped I didn’t look like too much of a dork, while my mind visualised what it would be like to kiss him against the lockers, hard and passionately, as his sculptured body pressed into mine. No, Naomi, he’s your bossand your source of income. Get those foolish thoughts out of your head.

‘So, were you wanting to do the same shifts as at Mon Amour?’ Patrick asked in his relaxed manner.

‘Oh, yes, sounds great.’ I let my words out too fast and felt my cheeks burning red.

What the hell is wrong with me today?

He let out a laugh and eyed me curiously. ‘And what days were those?’

‘Wednesday to Sunday.’

‘Perfect. I’ll get the paperwork for you.’ He brushed past me as he walked inside, leaving me with goosebumps.

Disagreements

I walked inside the house with a smile as big as a crescent moon etched on my face, but it quickly vanished when I caught sight of Victor, the French waiter from Mon Amour. He’s the last person I expected to see.Deb sat beside him with a wine glass the size of a fishbowl in her hand. Indie music blasted through her portable Bluetooth speakers while she bobbed her head and waved her arms with her eyes shut. She looked like she was at a rave instead of sitting in our living room. Two bottles of sauvignon blanc sat on the coffee table, one empty, one half-empty. Sauvignon blanc? Oh, of course. Victor’s favourite.

‘Naomi, you’re home,’ Deb said as she caught sight of me and waved me over to join them.

‘Hey, guys,’ I said with a smile. A potent ashtray scent drifted from their clothing.

‘Bonjour, Naomi,’ Victor said in his thick French accent while flashing his chipped-tooth smile.

‘When shit hits the fan, you drink booze. Booze is my one true love,’ Deb said as she took a sip from her humungous glass. Shecried with laughter for a few minutes, then wiped the tears from her eyes.

‘Guess what, Naomi? We’ve been practising Aussie slang, haven’t we, mate?’ Deb nudged Victor’s arm. ‘Victor’s brilliant. You’ve got to hear him.’

‘That’s right, mate,’ Victor replied in a deep Australian voice, and I couldn’t help but chuckle.

‘That was great. Anything else?’ I asked, eager to hear more.

He shook his head.

‘I’m having such a good day, thanks to this bad boy.’ Deb pointed to her glass and grinned.

‘Oui,’agreed Victor.

‘Work was honestly driving me off my rocker.’ She laughed. ‘So, tell me, mate – how did your job trial go?’ Deb asked as she crossed her legs and got comfortable.

‘Incredible! I can’t believe a restaurant like that even exists. I’m seriously so overwhelmed I even got the chance to work there.’ I flashed another huge smile.

‘What happened? Do they want you to come back, or will they call you?’ She narrowed her eyes.

I took a deep breath, not sure what kind of reaction to expect from Deb. ‘You’re not going to believe this, but … Patrick offered me a full-time position.’
