“You think that’s more likely than some random lunatic breaking and entering?” Ethan asked.

“Do you want to take that chance?” Caleb shot back.

I, for one, did not. The concept of Geneva being put in danger shivered me to my bones. “We can’t let anything happen to her.”

“We need to just focus on our jobs,” Ethan said.

I stared at him. “Care to elaborate?”

He shrugged. “I mean, I miss her, too, but I think we need to give her some space.”

Caleb sounded appalled. “What about everything I just said?”

“Yeah, I know…” Ethan said as he climbed out of the cockpit. Caleb and I followed him. “It’s just…I don’t know, maybe we should just see how things play out? She might call us.”

“We shouldn’t wait for her to make the first move,” I argued. “We’re the guys, ya know.” It wasn’t a great excuse, but it was all I could spring up in the moment.

“I think we should just check in with her to make sure she’s well and made it home safely at least,” Caleb suggested.

“That sounds like a good idea,” I said, pondering the options. “I’m heading back to my office to take care of some paperwork before I can leave for the day.”

I left Caleb and Ethan and trudged to my office. I flicked on the lights and heaved a sigh. I didn’t feel like working anymore today. I was too distracted by thoughts of red lips pressed against mine.

I had primal urgencies directed towards her and I didn’t think I’d be able to resist calling her.

Caleb raised a valid point. Geneva might be under a threat that she doesn’t even realize. It didn’t appear to be a random event with the hotel raid. After some following up, we had learned that the police talked to various other people staying in rooms on the same floor. None of the other guests mentioned having their own rooms broken into or witnessing any suspicious behavior.

Wouldn’t that mean that whoever broke into her hotel room meant it specifically for Geneva? Another shiver skittered up and down my spine. I squared my jaw. I would never let anything happen to her. I didn’t know her very well yet, but I had already invested a lot of heart and soul into this friendship that was probably blossoming into much more.

Ignoring the paperwork taunting me, I instead grabbed my keys and shut off the light. I left the office and walked out to my truck. I didn’t want to deal with work right then, even though I’d just experienced a few days off. I needed to go home and contemplate the right decision.

Sometimes if you didn’t put yourself out there and take a leap of faith, you might find yourself missing an opportunity that might not ever present itself again.

I drove down the interstate with the windows rolled down and the radio on full blast. It was therapeutic to feel the wind hitting my hair and the tunes filling my ears. I was in a zone the whole way home, rocking out. I didn’t even realize that my exit was coming up, and I had to swerve in order to make it just in time.

I lived off a quiet street, tucked into a small neighborhood lined with sidewalks and palm trees. When I got inside the house, I grabbed a cold beer out of the fridge and walked out to relax and enjoy it on my screened porch.

The sound of the crickets was lulling. I looked at my phone. Geneva’s phone number was blazing on the screen, burning my corneas. I needed to just call her. If I hesitated, I might wimp out.

What’s the worst that could happen? If she said she’d rather just be friends and take it slow, then I would just have to deal with it. It wouldn’t be the end of the world.

I took a deep breath and a hefty swig of my beer. It was now or never. Before I could talk myself out of it, I pushed the dial button.

My heartbeat pulsed through my ears. It was so loud that I could barely hear the sound of the ringing on the other end.

“Hello?” I relaxed as soon as I heard the sound of her deliciously feminine voice.

“Geneva?” My own voice sounded far away. “It’s Worth.”

There was no turning back now.

Chapter 21 - Geneva

“Worth?” My voice reflected the surprise—and pleasure— I felt that he was calling me. My lips curled into a giddy grin. My heart skipped a beat.

“Hi,” he said, sounding almost as breathless.

“It’s good to hear from you.”
