As I ran her credit card through and she signed the receipt, I made a note of her phone number and told her I’d call whenever I figured something out.

By closing time at three,I’d managed to book three tarot readings, schedule a consultation time with another client who wanted me to help her map out a witch’s herbal garden, had sold enough sage and sage spray that I wondered if the Boogie Man had come to town, and I’d also sold the most expensive crystal ball in the shop, which tendered me a tidy sum. I armed the security system and locked the door.

As I was headed back toward the house, Faron pulled in. I groaned, thinking he’d have to meet Grams now, but as I darted up the porch steps, I saw she’d left me a note. She’d be out all afternoon, exploring the town.

Clad in black jeans, with a black blazer over a blue V-neck tank top, Faron loped up the porch steps, his boots sounding with each footstep. His hair was loose, falling past his shoulders in waves, as dark as black coffee, and his eyes were as dark as his hair. He had a five o’clock shadow that made my heart race.

It was getting harder to keep my hands off him when we were together, and while he’d never pushed me, he would sweep me off to the bedroom if I gave him the signal.

He picked me up and swung me around before planting a kiss on my lips. Then, reluctantly, he pulled away. “Hey, beautiful, glad to see me?” he asked, nuzzling my neck.

“More than glad,” I said, losing myself in his arms as I felt a slick of wetness between my legs. Oh yes, I wanted him. My body ached, it had been so long since I had been held and touched and loved. I leaned into his embrace, letting him rock me gently as we stood there.

“I could get used to this,” he whispered, kissing my ear.

“So could I,” I whispered back. After a moment I reluctantly stood back. “Did you talk to Bree?” I asked.

“Yes, love, I did. As I thought, I couldn’t pick up much, except…”

“Yes?” I asked when he paused.

“I think…therewasa scent around the tree. Male. Like pheromones but I think it was something else.” He grimaced. “I think whoever planted that camera marked the tree. It’s not shifter scent, so I can’t be positive.”

I searched his face, not fully comprehending what he was trying to say. “You mean he peed on it?”

“Not exactly.” He cleared his throat. “Whoever he was, he left a present on the trunk.” When I still didn’t respond, he sighed and said, “Bluntly put, the guy shot his wad there. He ejaculated on the tree. My guess is he was wanking it while watching her.”

My stomach lurched. “Oh gods, I wish I hadn’t asked. Did you tell her?”

He winced. “I didn’t want to, but she has a right to know, especially if he ends up to be dangerous. This way, she can take extra precautions. As I said, the guy’s no shifter, so we can strike out the thought that he’s the serial killer.”

“That’s not a whole lot of comfort,” I said. “But I guess it’s better than nothing. And there’s no way to tell who the guy is?”

Faron shook his head. “Not unless you want me to walk up to every guy in the street and ask to smell his junk. And, as much as I like Bree, I’m not willing to volunteer for that duty.” He laughed and I joined him. It was nervous laughter on my part, but sometimes that was the easiest way to cope with things.

“No, I’m not going to ask you to do that,” I said. “Why don’t you come in and have some coffee?”

“Are you sure your great-grandmother won’t find out who I am?” he said. He might as well have shown his teeth. I could feel the sting behind the words.

“Oh, shut up. I’m sorry. If she comes home, so be it. She knows I’m dating you. But she might be inclined to give you a talking to. Don’t say I didn’t warn you—or try to protect you from it.” I opened the screen door, waiting.

Faron followed right behind me, slapping my ass as I headed into the house. “Don’t worry. I can hold my own.”

I wasn’t as sure as he was. In a battle of wills between the King of the Olympic wolf Pack and my great-grandmother, my bets were on Grams, every day.

CHAPTERNINE

Faron stayed for a few minutes, but he had Pack business to get back to.

“Will you be around tonight?” he asked. “I’d like to come over.”

“Not tonight. Grams and I have magical plans—she’s going to help me with something that I need to do.” The cord cutting ceremony was going to be hard, and I really didn’t want to talk about it.

A concerned look in his eyes, Faron stroked my face. “You look worried,” he said.

“I know, but—” I paused as Fancypants came careening through the living room and crashed into us. “Hey!”
