I looked over at her. Bree’s face was white.

“He must have seen Faron arrive. How? We took down the cameras! And why didn’t I know that I was being watched? I have excellent hunting skills. I can track and find my way through the wilderness. How did I miss this?” She shook her hands. “I can’t shake the feeling that, although we found the bugs the other day, he can still hear and see me.” As she gasped, hyperventilating, I took her by the shoulders and walked her over to the sofa.

“Sit. Breathe.” I closed my eyes and smoothed the energy in her aura. It was flaring, like the sun, and the more it flared, the more frantic she became. I coaxed my own energy—the healing, soothing energy of the earth—up, a furl of green smoke with gold sparkles running through it.

“What am I going to do?”

“Close your eyes and let me work.”

Bree sat back, trying to relax. Her energy wasn’t as strong as mine was, given mine was infused with magic, and so I sent the earth element through her aura, soothing the fear. The swirling earth energy smoothed out the wisps of fear and she started to breathe easier.

After a few minutes, she managed to gain control of her emotions, and she let out a long sigh and shook her head. “Okay, Daisy needs to see what he sent me. I’ll call her.”

“I need to tell Faron to be careful. If this freak decides to go off on him…”

“Please do. And apologize for me.”

“Apologize? You don’t have anything to be sorry about. You’re not the one at fault.” I paused, not wanting to leave her alone. “Say, do you want to come over for dinner? Grams is helping me tonight with a cord-cutting ceremony to let go of Rian.”

Bree, thought about it for a moment. “I don’t want to be in the way.”

“You won’t be. Call Daisy and see when she can be here.”

Bree pulled out her cell phone and called the sheriff. While she did that, I texted Faron, telling him what was going on, then texted Grams, telling her Bree would be joining us. Grams texted back immediately, saying there would be plenty of dinner.

A moment later, Bree hung up. “Daisy’s in the neighborhood. She’ll be here in five minutes.” She stared at the dead flowers and the note. “You want to hear something?”

“What is it?”

“For the first time in my life, I think I’m scared.”

After Daisy arrivedand took the evidence into custody, telling Bree she might want to get a security system, Bree followed me over to my house. I told her to bring the dogs. She would worry about them being home alone, especially with a crazed stalker on the loose.

We drove back to my place, Bree following me, and the first thing I noticed was that Kyle had left a note stating the wasps were gone. There might be a few flying around but he had managed to take the nest. He promised to give Faron some of the paper from it once he had evicted all the tenants.

Grams’s taxi pulled in as I was unlocking the door. As she stepped out, I motioned for Fancypants to go inside, and Bree and I hurried down to take the grocery bags from her. Grams also had a couple other shopping bags and refused to let me carry them.

“I’m perfectly capable of carrying these. Now, get those bags into the kitchen so I can start making dinner,” she said, shooing us into the house. As I carried the food into the kitchen, I heard Grams say to Bree, “You look as shaken as a martini. What’s wrong?”

Bree spoke in soft tones that I couldn’t quite make out as I unloaded the food. There was fresh wild-caught salmon, potatoes, heavy cream, extra-sharp cheddar, chives and shallots, fresh peas, a box of imported shortbread mix, and strawberries.

I finished setting the food on the counter when Grams entered the kitchen, a look of concern filling her eyes.

“Bree told me what happened. It’s dangerous for her to stay there alone.”

“I know,” I said. At that moment, my phone sounded. It was Faron, texting me back.

what the fuck? if he sets a foot near me, he’ll find out why people fear wolf shifters. you ask bree if she wants me to post a couple guards on her land. nobody but nobody is going to intimidate me, and any freak who treats a woman this way needs to be horsewhipped. my crew and I are ready to help.

let me ask her. we should probably ask daisy, as well.

text me once you do.

I slid off my stool. “I’ll be right back. I need to talk to Bree. After that I’ll help you cook.”

“No, don’t worry about cooking. I want to make dinner.”
