I figured we’d get past the movie-related stuff and then we could get to the department and our studies. “Well, as a consultant, I help to make sure Mr. Malcolm is keeping things accurate, and I’ve helped the cast acclimate to this environment. Things are a lot different out here in the Amazon.”

“And that’s how you came to save Jake’s life?” He leaned in as if he couldn’t wait to get all of the juicy details.

He made it sound much different than how it happened. “You mean the snake bite? Oh, well, I wouldn’t go as far as saying that I performed a miracle. I just identified the snake and worked with the medics to ensure he was properly cared for with the appropriate antivenin.”

“So, the snake was indeed deadly?”

“Yes, one of the deadliest. This place is full of them.” I didn’t want to get too far into explaining venom and the hundreds of snakes that were a part of the rainforest’s ecosystem.

He gave a nod as if he were satisfied with that answer. “What’s it been like for you to come out here and work with celebrities like Jake Storm and Tess Sinclair? Does it ever get to be intimidating being around famous people? Or have you done this type of work before?”

“No, never, not for a movie anyway.”

“And the fame part? Intimidating?”

I hadn’t really thought about their fame. Both were just normal people to me, but I knew I had to relate as anyone else who would see them as big stars.

Jake only intimidates me in other ways, and none of them are because of his stardom. “Not really. I mean, both are great. Both are doing an exceptional job. Especially Tess, who manages to look absolutely gorgeous in this oppressive heat, and Jake’s been really professional. It’s amazing watching him do a lot of his own stunts. Although I will say, his stunt man is pretty amazing too, but I don’t know. I have sat face to face with witchdoctors and cannibals, so I’m not really fazed by normal people.”

“But they aren’t exactly normal people, right? Jake Storm is one of the biggest stars in Hollywood right now. And he has one of the biggest and most dedicated followings as well.”

He was talking about the fan clubs. I was reminded of Portia and how weirdly possessive she was of Jake, but just to make sure I didn’t speak ill of anyone, I kept a big smile plastered on my face. “Oh, yes, I’ve met the president of his fan club. I’m sure those ravenous Angels are ready for this film.” I thought that Portia would appreciate a little shout out.

“Ravenous is right,” he said under his breath. He looked up and dropped his pen. Then he glanced around as if he didn’t want anyone else to hear. “I hear they get a little possessive. Asking for underwear and fantasy date contests. He told me it drives him crazy. Could you imagine? Having that kind of crowd all over you? Most of them are desperate, lonely housewives. Before you know it, he’ll have one of them stalking his house.”

“Oh, yeah, I noticed their enthusiasm. Those women are practically rabid for Jake.” I chuckled and found I had loosened up quite a bit. Arthur wasn’t so bad after all. He was nice enough to talk to me like anyone else.

Jake had been right about Tess. She worried for no reason.

“So, tell me about Ben. Are you two getting along?”

“Oh, well, let’s see where I should begin.” I tried to think about what I knew of Ben, knowing my opinion wasn’t the most popular.

“You make it sound as if you aren’t sure what to say. Have you two clashed?”

“We’ve had our moments, but nothing serious. He’s a great guy. He’s really passionate about his movies, and although some might find him a bit crazy or eccentric, he’s really an amazing artist.” Dammit, did I say crazy? My face turned a bit red. I hope I didn’t say something I shouldn’t.

“Well, I think I have all I need for the interview, Ms. Bridges.” He pushed his chair out and got to his feet.

I couldn’t believe he was finished that abruptly. I still had so much to talk about. “Oh, I was hoping that I’d have the opportunity to speak about the program I work for with the university’s anthropology department.”

Arthur gave me a sympathetic look. “Oh, I’m so sorry. I’m out of time for the day, Kate. Maybe we could hook up when you’re back in LA?”

“That would be great. Could I get your card?” I had no idea how to get in touch with him, and I didn’t want to ask Ally for anything. She was still shooting me daggers, and I had no idea what I’d said or done to the girl.
