After we started school, she worked until she was in an accident, and that’s when she started taking drugs. She once told me that she became hooked on drugs from the strong ones the doctor subscribed for her. He stopped subscribing medication to her because she was hooked on them. Things went downhill fast after that.”

“I’m sorry that was your life. I wish she would have brought you and Jackie here to us.”

“I don’t think she knew about you guys. Jackie and I never knew we had any family; we would have contacted you if we had known. When the police told me about Jackie, I tried to find our mother. I think she must be dead.”

“Do you want me to find her?” Steel asked.

She glanced over at me, and then she looked at Steel; “I don’t think so. If she is alive, she never came home to Jackie and me, so she must be dead.”

“How old are you? If you don’t mind me asking,” Steel asked

“I’ll be twenty-seven next week. I know what you are thinking. You’re thinking I waited long enough to have sex, but I never wanted to have sex until I met Cole.”

“Okay, we won’t discuss sex anymore. Believe me I wasn’t thinking that. I hope you stay around so we can get to know each other. I’m having a big dinner on Saturday, and all the family on the mountain wants to meet you. So I hope you will come.”

“Of course, I’ll come. If they want to meet me, I want to meet them too. I noticed her eyes water, and she quickly got up and walked to the kitchen area. “How about I make us some tacos for dinner.”

“I love tacos,” Steel said.

“Me too,” I agreed. I glanced at Steel, “Bailey is a chef.”

“Oh yeah, can you help me with Saturday’s dinner?”

“Sure, I can. How about we write down everything you’ll need? Do you mind if I bring my own knives and pans?”

“Are you kidding me? I’ll be happy if you bring them. The Aunts will be there bright and early, so maybe you can spend the night.”

“We’ll be there Friday morning,” Cole said.

“Do you mean my Aunts? How many aunts and Uncles do I have?”

“Yes, there are thirteen kids in your Dad’s family, so you have tons of relatives. The ones you bought the property from won’t be there. They live on the California coast somewhere. We don’t talk to them, so don’t worry about running into any of those family members.”

“Alright, I like you for my cousin. I wish you could have known Jackie; you would have love her. She was the sweetest person on earth. I can’t wait until I kill that monster who murdered her. I’m sorry. I swear all I do is cry anymore, but I will miss her every day forever.”

“You cry all you want,” Steel said, going to Bailey and hugging her. “I wish I could have known her. You need to get it out of your head about killing this guy. Viper or I will kill the bastard. He won’t live to take another breath as soon as we find him.”

“No, it’s my right to be the one to kill him. That bastard took the only person I had in the world from me. He’s going to die by my hands.”

“Okay, if you feel so strong about it,” Steel said as he hugged her again, but he shook his head when he glanced at me. I knew he was pissed by the way his eyes turned color. Damn, I’ll probably have to fight him to keep him from killing Donnie Turner.

We enjoyed our tacos as Steel and Bailey caught up with each other's lives. I laughed when Bailey told us about her and her sister going trick or treating three times by going home and redoing their makeup.

“We had enough candy to last us forever. “I have a picture of Jackie. Let me get it,” she said. She brought a framed photo of a beautiful teenager who had laughter in her eyes as she posed for her picture.

“Wow,” both Steel and I said, Jackie was the spitting image of Steel’s sister Jaz. “She’s identical to my younger sister, Jaz. It’s unreal how much they look alike. It’s like they were identical twins.”

“Wow, I would love to meet Jaz.”

“You’ll meet her on Saturday. She has six-month-old twins, so she is pretty busy. But she wouldn’t miss a family dinner. I guess I better be going. Spike, it’s time to leave,” Spike opened his eyes and got up. And Steel and his dog left. Bailey ran to the door.

“Levi, when are we going to make that list?”

“How about if Viper brings you over tomorrow?”

She turned and looked at me. “We’ll be there around ten,” I said, putting my arm around her.

“I’ll be home all day cleaning before Saturday, so come anytime.”
