“My phone, I must have left it over at Izzy's. Her kids like watching cartoons on it. What do you think about my father being found? We’re going there tomorrow; he lives two hours away.”

“Are you excited?”

“More nervous than excited. I don’t want to interrupt his life. I’m not telling him who I am. I don’t want him to feel guilty if he does; I don’t know if he will, but just in case.”

I looked at Steel; I felt he had something to say. “What is it?”

“We need you to leave on a job on Saturday. There is no one left. Spartan leaves tomorrow, and I’m going right now.”

“Where is the job?”

“It’s in Afghanistan. Ghost will be going with you.”

“What are we going there for?”

“Two kids. Their grandfather got hold of us because they threw the boy's dad in prison on a made-up charge. Their grandfather is anxious to get the kids out of there. They have someone who is hiding the kids.”

“Viper, you have to save those boys. I wish we could save their father, but I know that won’t happen. But we can save those boys. I don’t want you to worry about me and the baby. We’ll be fine.”

“Damn, this isn’t the best time. What with her father showing up, the baby will be here soon, and Sam doesn’t bark at anyone. He’s the worst guard dog we could get. Who will watch over Bailey?”

“You should be in there and out of there in two weeks,” Spartan said.

“I’ve heard that before.”

“The last time you stopped to save Weston is exactly what you did. You stopped because you thought to bring him home for his family to bury, but he was alive. So you did what you had to do to save him. This time, you go in and out, not stopping for anything. Just bring the boys to their grandfather.”

“Of course, he’s going to get those boys. You don’t have to worry about me. I have all of my family around here. I’ll miss you, but we have until Saturday.”

“I have to leave. I’ll talk to all of you later, Steel said. “I’ll call you tomorrow night, Bailey, so you can tell me what happened with your dad.”

“Okay, don’t forget to call me.”

I smiled, listening to Bailey talking to her newfound family; you would think they have known each other their entire life.

Bailey

My hands shook, and Cole took one as we walked into the Hardware store. I spotted the boys right away. These two boys were my brothers. I decided to buy a few things I needed anyway: a drill and a hammer. I suppose I could always use those.

When I took them up to pay for them, my Dad smiled at me. I fainted, just like that. In the blink of an eye, I fainted. It was only momentarily Cole caught me and held me in his arms. I knew this was not going to be anything like I planned. I was just going to look at him, and if he didn’t recognize me, I would leave.

“Is she alright? Here, let me get you a wet towel. You poor thing, I bet that was scary, fainting like that. My wife fainted when she was pregnant with our oldest child. It scared me more than it did her.”

“Bailey, are you okay?”

“No, she’s not okay,” I stopped Uncle Joe before he could say anything else. “I’m fine, Uncle Joe,” where the heck did he come from, I didn’t even know he was in here.

“Your name is Bailey; I think I knew a Bailey once. I can’t remember the first twenty-six years of my life.” I saw the boys watching me. My father’s voice sounded just like it used to when he would sing me the Little Blue Bird song when he put Jackie and me to bed.

“Are you ready to leave, sweetheart?”

“Bailey, say something,” Uncle Joe pleaded.

I looked at the man who had no memory of me. “Do you wish you knew about those years you can’t remember?”

“Sometimes, I wish for that more than anything. But other times, I look at my children and would never want to hurt them.”
