“How much further do we have?” Ghost asked.

“They are also searching for the boys,” I whispered,

“Not far; we have to start looking on the ground around this building; they said they put the boys in a hidden room underground. We have to look at the wall behind the building, and we will see a green line. It’s six steps from that line.”

It took thirty minutes before we found the trap door, and we approached it cautiously, not taking any chances. When we reached the bottom, the boys sat against the back wall.

“Hello, boys. We're here to help you. Was there someone else with you?” I asked gently, not wanting to scare them any more than they were already.

“He went to find food and never came back. He told us to stay here,” one of the boys replied, his voice trembling.

The littlest boy started crying. “That man said my mommy is dead, and the bad people have my daddy.”

I offered them some water and food. “Here, I took food from my backpack and gave them water and energy bars. “We’re taking you to your grandfather.”

“Are you going to take my Daddy to Grandpa too? I want my Mommy and Daddy.”

“Tommy’s six, and I’m eight, I won’t cry.”

“What’s your name?” I asked the older boy.

“My name is Brett. Are they going to kill my Daddy? My Grandpa is old. What if he dies? Where would Tommy and I go then?”

“Let’s get you to your Grandpa, and then we we’ll work on bringing your dad back,” I saw Ghost waving his hands in the air, trying to shut me up. He looked at the boys.

“Now, listen carefully,” Ghost said quietly. I want neither of you to say a word when we go outside. We can’t let anyone hear us. So if you have to pee, just pee in your pants, and we’ll take care of it later. We have to find a vehicle,” Ghost said, whispering the entire time he talked.

I know where a car is.”

“You do? Where?”

“Behind the building.” He got up and went to a small chest. He opened it and took out some keys. I noticed there were clothes in there that the men here wore.

“This is great. It will save us so much time. They have all these clothes in here, too,”

I said, reaching in and grabbing all of the clothes. I had already planned what I was going to do with these clothes. I wouldn’t say anything to Ghost just yet.

“Viper, don’t make plans that don’t go along with this trip,” Ghost warned.

“Why does he call you Viper?”

“Because I’m fast as a viper snake, and no one can catch me. You don’t have to worry about anyone while Ghost and I are with you.”

“Why is his name Ghost?”

“Because Ghost is so good, no one can see him. You won't be seen if you stick close to him.”

“Let’s go.” Ghost urged. I signaled for silence, and we all went out the trap door and around the back of the building. The car was right where he said it would be. We quietly climbed into the vehicle and started down the road. We had our night goggles on and didn’t need our lights on. It took three hours to make it to the plane because we went around the long way to avoid being seen. I turned and looked at Ghost. He knew what I was going to do.

“No, we are not doing this again. The last time we had to leave without you, it took four years before you got home. You have a wife and a baby to think about,” Ghost argued. “Don’t do this.”

“I have to. These boys only have their Dad. You heard him. His grandpa is old. What happens when he dies? I’ll be here waiting for you two nights from now. Go, I’ll get the Dad and be here, I promise.”

I turned and ran back to the vehicle, put the clothes on, and wrapped my head. I jumped inside the car and left; I couldn’t screw this up. I had Bailey and my baby to think about. I know this country like the back of my hand. I knew where the building that those men were talking about was. I had to find Tommy’s Dad and get out of there.

I returned to the Trap door and planned on sleeping for three hours. Until the sun went down, I knew I had to sleep in the daytime. After laying there thinking about Bailey for what seemed like forever, I checked to see if the sun had set.

I’d give it another hour. I must have dozed. I got up and looked outside. It was dark. I didn’t know what had happened to the man who was supposed to be with the boys. Hopefully, he was somewhere safe.
