“I’m going to inform the others about this situation. You never know who might be looking for you.”

“They all think I’m dead.”

“Why do they think that?”

“Because when I left the scene in the ambulance, I was declared dead. But I shocked the hell out of the EMTs when I opened my eyes. It was reported that I had died, and my uncle kept it that way.”

“I’m sorry you had to go through all of that pain. So why are you staying here with your aunts and not somewhere more hidden?”

That’s something my father and aunts planned; I have no idea why they wanted me here. They obviously don’t have a gym or can even work with me.”

“How did you get here?”

“My dad flew me here.”

“He owns a plane?”

“Yes, he’s a successful entrepreneur, inventing various kitchen gadgets and other things. He seems to have a knack for knowing what people want.”

As we pulled into my long driveway, Mertle and Spike, my dogs, were waiting for me. As soon as we stopped, another dog ran up to us. “I wonder whose dog this is,” I said, opening Charlotte’s door.

“Sara, what are you doing here? She must have followed us,” Charlotte said, turning toward me. “This is Sara, and she’s my dog.”

“She’s welcome here. What kind of dog is she?”

“She’s a Bernese and Golden Retriever mix.”

“She’s beautiful.”

“So are yours.”

“Shall we get started,” I said, picking her up and carrying her inside.

“I need to use my crutches. How will I learn if you carry me everywhere?”

I smiled as I walked inside and went straight to my home gym.

“Wow! This place is amazing.”

“Yeah, my team and I work out every day. Most of them get here at four or five in the morning.”

“I hope I’m not interrupting any of their workouts.”

“No, you’re not. They’re finished for the day. Would you like to start on the parallel bars?”

“Umm, okay.”

“I’ll be right behind you; I won’t let you fall,” I sat her down and let her place her hands on the bars.

“You don’t have to stand so close. As long as you are in the room, it’s fine. I’m not afraid I’ll fall. I’ll go real slow.”

“Okay, I’ll be ten feet away at the weights. Just say my name if you need help.”

“Thank you.”

Watching her cautiously navigate the bars, I recognized what she required to progress. She might not like it, but it was necessary. I approached her. “Your legs need to be massaged to improve circulation. I’m surprised they didn’t tell you that before releasing you from the hospital.”

“It’s hard for me to have them massaged because they are still so tender.”
