“Of course, I’ll make you a sandwich.” I watched her take down some delicious-smelling homemade bread, then took out some roast beef, piling it onto my sandwich. She also brought me a glass of sweet tea.

“Thank you; this looks delicious.” I bit into the sandwich, and my taste buds threw a party. I was sure I was making a lot of noise while I ate, but damn, I could help it. It was so good. Reluctantly, I took my last bite. I must have been starving.

When I glanced at her, she placed another sandwich before me. “Thanks, you’re an amazing cook. Is everything homemade?” I asked.

She chuckled. “Yes, I’m a chef; I haven’t worked since I moved here. I’ve run out of hiding places, so I didn’t bother looking for a job in town.”

“I’ve been thinking about the guy who’s been following you. I believe he gets his kicks from scaring you. He hasn’t tried anything else yet, so we’ll find him before he tries any harm. I have friends who can find anyone, so it won’t take long before we know his name.”

“That would be great. I hope it’s soon,” she replied.

“Will you go back home, to where you lived?” I asked.

“No, this is my home.”

“What about your family, won’t they miss you?”

“I have two cousins and an aunt, that I don’t know. My sister died years ago, and she was the only family I had left. I was eighteen, and Jackie was seventeen when she died.”

“I’m sorry; losing your sister must have been devastating.”

“Yes, this person she went out with one time killed her,” she said, her voice trembling. I saw her reach for the counter and grab hold; I jumped up and helped her to sit down.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

“I know who he is. It’s Donnie Turner, my sister’s killer. I thought there was something about him. I just couldn’t figure it out. It’s him.”

“Do you think he’s already out of prison?”

“He was seventeen, so he wasn’t charged as an adult. He was supposed to get out when he turned twenty-five; I guess he’s twenty-five. But he’s been following me for three years, so they let him out early.”

“Why did he kill your sister?”

“Because she broke up with him, Jackie told me she thought something was wrong with him mentally. Whenever she tried breaking up with him at school, he would cry and hang on to her. I told her never to be alone with him. he called her all the time, Jackie went out with him one, maybe two times, at the most.”

“I want you to keep this door locked while I’m gone.”

“Where are you going?”

“I’m going to fetch Carly and bring her here. We’ll all go to my home tomorrow and stay there until we catch him. Lock the door.”

I didn’t waste time collecting Carly. She wasn’t very cooperative, and when she finally agreed, she made me wait until she packed clothes, food, and her laptop. It was dark, and I didn’t want Bailey to be alone at night. I don’t know why I was so concerned, but I was all she had right now.

“So, remind me again why we’re sneaking out in the night to go to the Peterson cabin?” Carly asked.

“Because she realized who this guy was who’s been terrorizing her. He is her late sister’s ex-boyfriend.”

Carly’s eyes widened. “The one who killed her sister? Why isn’t he in prison?”

“They let a lot of prisoners out early, and he was one of them is my guess.”

“Wow, this is not good. We better hurry.”

I rolled my eyes. “That’s what I’ve been saying,” I said as we walked. I tried taking my time. It was dark, and I didn’t want Carly to stumble.

“You don’t have to walk slow for me; I used to walk all over this mountain at night, hiding from Jim.”

“I’m sorry you had to go through that. Why didn’t you tell Ryan what was happening?”
