“She’s not a traitor. She just saw that Agnan was evil and managed to escape him. She tried to do right by you, too.”

“You don’t know anything about Grendel.”

I grimaced, wondering how Queen Mirielle would feel about Lysandra using the given name the Order called her.

“I know that she is living her life with the King of Silverhold, and you are fighting a lost battle,” I retorted.

“Then you know nothing,” Lysandra said smugly. “But you’ll get there. I’m sure of it. No daughter of Agnan is that dense. You should try to hear me out before you find yourself utterly alone.”

“Oh, gods…” I moaned, dizziness overtaking me.

“But something’s changed now, hasn’t it?” She tried to keep the taunt from her voice, but she wasn’t very successful as she stroked my face. “You’re already on your own, aren’t you?”

I sniffed and looked away, eyes turning toward the window as I struggled to keep my composure.

“What happened, Elix?” Lysandra pressed. “Does the king know about you now?”

I swallowed thickly and met her dark eyes, biting on my lower lip. “Yes,” I whispered. “He found out. There was a DNA test.”

“Oh, honey.” She reached down and embraced me. “Do you see what I mean? You’re just replaceable to him. He doesn’t care about you. Honestly, none of the kings care about any of us. They only care about the royals. That’s the way it’s always been. They only care about their own. The rest of us can rot.”

My eyes closed as my head began to throb, and I exhaled.

Jace did care about me, but he’s worried about the kingdom, too.

“You left days ago, so I’m sure he’s not coming for you,” Lysandra continued, driving her point home. “But that’s how they all are. Can’t you see that they’re just not good? That they don’t deserve what they have?”

I parted my lids and nodded slowly. “I know,” I sniffled. “You’re right. I kept thinking that maybe he would come searching for me.”

My sister sat back and offered me a sympathetic smile. “You’re not alone, though,” she promised. “I’m here for you.”

“What about my brother?”

“Your half-brother,” she corrected me.

You’re my half-sister, too,I almost said, but managed to hold my tongue.

I drew in a breath to steady myself. “Yes. Saint.”

“What about him?”

“What are you going to do to him?”

Lysandra frowned deeply, her head cocking. “Nothing. What would I do to him?”

“I don’t know. Isn’t he a threat to you, too?”

Lysandra shrugged. “I have no interest in Saint. He’s just a working fae, like the rest of us. He needs better taste in friends, but I don’t wish him any harm. I mean, as long as he stays out of our way.”

I took another shuddering breath.

“You’ve had a hell of a time, Elix. You really should rest,” she told me. “I’ve probably unloaded too much on you too fast, but you have to understand that this has been years coming.”

“I can’t rest!” I protested as she again got up to leave. “You haven’t answered anything, not really!”

Her dark eyebrows furrowed. “I think I answered quite a lot,” she laughed. “What haven’t I answered?”

“What do you want from me? How long do you intend to keep me here like this?”
