“Don’t be surprised if I do!” he called out, disappearing through the double doors of the dining room.

With a sigh of resignation, I stood to follow him out. It was time to start my day, too.

Chapter 13

Jace

I’d been thinking about this all week, but keeping it from Elix’s astute purview was another thing altogether.

Cirilla advised me against it.

“It’s too soon, and Lysandra could still be watching her,” my enchantress warned when I informed her of my plan for the next day and a half.

“I’m taking all the necessary precautions,” I insisted. “And we’ve been cooped up in the palace for the past two weeks. It’s not fair to Elix. She’s been doing everything we’ve asked of her, training with the elemental faeries, consuming the pepper seeds, and exercising diligently. She’s gone every morning before I’m even awake. I need this time with her.”

Cirilla’s brow raised curiously. “Oh? Is there something special happening?”

“None of your damn business,” I retorted.

But Cirilla was just as perceptive as Elix. She had to know that my plans for the evening and the following day were a part of something bigger.

I found her in the art studio when I returned from the city, her slender frame wrapped in a painter’s apron, streaked in dark, soulful colors. For a long moment, I merely watchedher from the doorway, appreciating her broad, skilled strokes against the canvas.

“Are you going to give me a kiss or just stand there?” she finally asked.

I chuckled. “I didn’t want to interrupt a genius at work,” I replied as she set her brush down and turned to embrace me.

Her entire form relaxed against me, and I inhaled her sweet scent, a tautness forming in my pants immediately.

“Is dinner ready? How long have I been in here?” She stepped back to look at her watch, but I grabbed her hands.

“We’re not having dinner here,” I informed her.

Stunned, she blinked, uncertainty clouding her lovely emerald irises. “I don’t think it’s a very good idea to go out and eat,” she murmured. “Not yet.”

“We’re not going out, either… not really. Come on. The car is waiting.”

She slipped off her apron and set it aside, grabbing my extended hand as I led.

“Oh, give me a clue,” she begged. “I don’t like surprises.”

“Everyone likes surprises,” I countered. “As long as they’re good.”

“Good surprises can turn bad really fast,” she countered.

I snorted. “Not this one. You’ll see.”

Tugging on her hand like an excited child, I guided her away from the art studio and through the wide, carpet-run halls of the palace, her running shoes squeaking as she touched the wood floors.

“You really are excited,” she teased, getting in on the fun. I winked at her over my shoulder.

“You have no idea,” I promised, licking my lips, and she tittered.

“Sounds promising.”

Through the front foyer and out into the periwinkle twilight, we moved, the full moon rising high in the sky above us. Llyodiver opened the back of the magic-armored SUV, and I stepped back to allow Elix in first.

“Are you going to give me a clue?” she begged.
