The reason Lysandra was acting even more erratically became clear. Lysandra truly had wanted to rekindle the Order of Souls to its initial capacity. Agnan only wanted what he wanted: power.

“A blood oath. Now,” Agnan, in Lysandra’s body, told him, and I shook my head, forcing myself to focus on the terror unfolding in front of us. “You got to see your precious Elix.”

Jace looked at me, and I screeched out. “NO! Don’t give him anything!”

“You know what I’ll do if you don’t!” Agnan insisted, drawing closer to me.

The dark fae laid a cold hand on me. Jace’s face turned opaque, before he slapped Agnan’s palm from my arm.

“DON’T!” Jace choked. “I’ll do it!”

My sister, or Agnan, whoever it was, smiled and withdrew, reaching out of my view into the nightstand beside me. I gasped when the fae resurfaced with a knife in hand, ready to slice open their palms and fuse their blood together for the pact.

“Let me die!” I begged. “Don’t succumb to her—to him!”

Jace pivoted his head toward me, sadness coloring his face as he looked down at me. “No,” he muttered. “I wouldn’t ever let you die… but that’s not what he’s threatening.”

I managed to swing my head back and forth again. “It doesn’t matter,” I begged. “Nothing is worth entering into a blood oath with him.”

The fae raised a hand to strike me into silence, but Jace was lightning fast, grabbing the leader of the Order’s wrist and twisting it. A loud squeal echoed from the dark fae’s mouth at the unexpected attack.

“JACE!” I wailed, catching the look of sheer malice on the dark fae’s face. My eyes locked with my mate’s, and through our joint gaze, a communication was formed. It was too late for him to backtrack now, whatever threat that the fae had held over Jace out the window. He had to act or retreat, but he had Agnan in his grasp.

Jace’s arm bent the fae’s more, and Agnan howled in Lysandra’s high-pitched tone. The dark fae’s free hand rose to shoot bolts of electricity outward.

Jace’s leg kicked under Agnan’s and threw him off balance.

“You fool!” Agnan spat, the female voice completely gone now, a male’s voice in its place. “I warned you what I would do!”

Without speaking, Jace morphed into his animal form, the blanket falling away, tufts of fur appearing all over his body. He pounced on Agnan, but the fae fell away, screaming as he ran for the door. “You’ll regret this!” Agnan wheezed, Lysandra’s voice back in play, but panic edged the words. “He’ll come for you!”

Suddenly, my legs and arms were free of the invisible chains that had held me down, and I jumped from the bed, my body still woozy and wobbly despite the adrenaline pumping through me.

Jace shifted back into his fae body. “NO!” he yelled as I stumbled toward the door after the dark fae. “

“She’s—Agnan is getting away!” I rasped. “You can’t let him!”

“He’s possessed Lysandra’s form!” Jace explained. “He’ll take you over if you go. Let me!”

He was gone before I could argue, my head spinning as I fell back against the wall, struggling to catch my breath.

A thousand fragmented thoughts ran through my mind, racing to catch up with one another, but the commotion on the main floor forced them all aside and made me stumble forward and head into the hallway of the farmhouse.

“Jace?” I called out, willing my weakness away. Low growls met my ears, and I used both hands to guide me down the steps as I clung to the railing. “Jace?”

“I’ll take her!” Agnan’s voice echoed up the hallway toward me. “She’s mine now, Alpha! All of Mystara will be mine!”

A whimper followed the announcement as my foot touched the landing, another wave of dizziness overtaking me, and I jerked my head around, looking for where the fight had landed.

I barely managed to duck out of the way as a chair flew toward my head, crashing over the wall, and Lysandra appeared, limping and grunting.

“Where did you go, Alpha?” Agnan taunted. “Did I hurt you? Is that all it took?” The dark fae’s eyes landed on me, face brightening. “Elix!”

I recoiled at the sight of the leering, but as Agnan advanced, a memory of my training struck me. Without warning, I connected to the light overhead and drew the heat forward, producing a fireball from the electricity. Agnan gasped, diving to the left when I threw the fireball at him.

“Really, Elix? This body is a rental!” he yelled defiantly.

On trembling legs, I pushed myself off the wall, stumbling toward the front door to access the wind, but before I could reach the knobs, my legs gave out.
