“He’s gone. He’s dead. You don’t need to worry about him.” I held her closer and broke into a jog across the country road, trying to remember where I’d seen the closest house on my way in.

“L-Lysandra…”

“Please, Elix, don’t speak,” I begged her. “We’ll sort all this out later, all right? For now, you just need rest.”

“No…” she rasped, but she didn’t finish her thought, and I realized that she had fallen unconscious again, propelling my steps over the road.

Rumbling whirled me around with my mate in my arms, teeth baring as I prepared for an upcoming battle.

The crimson pickup slowed down, the elderly couple gawking at the sight of my naked body.

“Alpha?!” the female choked from the open window of the passenger side. “Is that really you?”

“Yes,” I replied tersely as the vehicle came to a stop. “You wouldn’t happen to have a phone on you by any chance, would you?”

“Yes, Alpha, of course,” her companion replied, jumping out of the driver’s side. “And a spare pair of overalls, too—if you’d like.”

The old fae lowered the lip of the tailgate and threw the outfit over the side of the vehicle as I moved to lay Elix against thecab. The female found me a phone, and I looked back toward the fallen house. It was no longer in view from where we stood.

“Dare I ask what happened, Alpha? Are you injured? Is she?” the female asked softly.

“I’m sending for help,” I told her curtly, slipping into the overalls, which came up to my ankles when secured, but I was more concerned with Elix than my wayward appearance.

“She’s your fiancée, isn’t she? Miss Elix?” the elderly fae pressed, peering intently at Elix’s face as I dialed Cirilla.

Keeping a watchful eye on the couple, I waited for Cirilla to answer.

“What happened to her?” the male wanted to know. “She needs a healer.”

As if I didn’t know that.

I wished they would stop asking so many questions when my nerves were so fraught. To my relief, Cirilla finally answered.

“Who is this?” the enchantress snapped. “How did you get my number?”

“It’s your king,” I retorted. “Come find me?—”

I barely finished the sentence when a torpedo of scarlet fog enshrouded me, and Cirilla stood in front of us, scaring the old couple.

“Oh, my gods,” she muttered, jumping onto the tailgate, her rainbow braids swinging. “What happened?”

“Never mind that now. I need to get her back to the palace, and I need a cleanup crew over there.”

I eyed the couple deliberately, and Cirilla understood my subtle talking. “Right away, Alpha.”

She moved to gather Elix in her arms.

“Be careful with her,” I growled, and the enchantress nodded.

“I’ll guard her with my life, Alpha.”

As quickly as she’d come, Cirilla was gone, taking Elix with her through the teleportation portal.

“Wow! The kingdom’s enchantress, too!” the female chortled. “We’re going to have a lot to talk about at our bridge club, huh, Lenny?”

Lenny looked pained as he caught my glance. “She doesn’t mean anything by that.”

“Of course not,” I replied genially, handing the phone back to his wife. “Thank you for all your help. I’ll have someone come by to compensate you for your troubles—and to return your overalls.”
