Our private runway sat apart from the bustling main building, and if Jace had his way, the palace jet would come and go from our home, as it always had before. I had put a stop to that practice three years into our marriage.

The airport was only a few miles from Goldhaven Palace and worth the drive to spare our lungs from the intake of jet fuel, in my opinion.

As promised, the magic-armored SUV sat glinting in the sunlight on the platform when I descended the steps, my handsome, beaming husband leaning against the pristine ebony hood.

He pushed himself off, but before he could move an inch, the back door opened, and a bundle of screaming hurtled toward me.

“MOMMY!” Meryk howled, throwing himself into my arms. I dropped my bag on the ground and extended my hands toward him, fully expecting this greeting from my four-year-old son.

“You were gone so long! Too long!” he whined as I held him on my hip, leaning down to grab my bag. But I was too slow, Jace already collecting it and at my side to offer me a happy smile before placing a kiss on my cheek.

“I was gone for two days, Mer,” I reminded the boy. “That’s barely a weekend!”

“It’s too long!” Meryk insisted.

I gave my mate an apologetic look, and Jace shrugged.

“I thought we had fun,” he laughed, ruffling his son’s dark mop of curls with his free hand. “But I’m not Mommy.”

“I want to go to your shows!” Meryk told me defiantly, and I nodded, heels clicking against the pavement as we approached the vehicle. The driver immediately opened the back door, bowing politely at us.

“Luna,” he muttered.

“Thank you, Sam.” I smiled and placed my son inside first before crawling in after him, Jace following behind us.

The door closed in our wake, and Meryk crawled into my lap. “Why do you have to be gone so long?” he sighed.

“I would have taken you with me if I could,” I told him. “You know I always do.”

I snuggled his sweet body close to mine, inhaling his toddler smell. Soon, he would be a little fae who wouldn’t want to sit in his mother’s lap. I had to enjoy these moments while they lasted.

“But I’m home now, and we can do whatever you want,” I added as the vehicle began to move. I met my mate’s eyes across the car, his intense, russet irises shining with love.

And I have a surprise for you,I told him silently. His dark eyebrows rose as if he understood my unspoken words, which wouldn’t surprise me in the least.

The SUV wound away from the busy airport roads toward the highway until we were headed into Geldon and toward the palace on the outskirts of the capital city.

Relief sagged my shoulders as it always did when I arrived home, a feeling of peace overtaking me. It wasn’t that I didn’t enjoy the lifestyle I led with my work, my art taking me all over the continent and the world at times. But nothing ever beat being home.

“Tell me, my loves, what did you do while I was gone?” I pressed, holding Meryk closer. He was right. It did feel like I had been away longer.

“Well, we went to visit Uncle Saint?—”

“He let me ride his motorcycle!” Meryk piped in.

I gaped at Jace. “Hewhat?”

Jace shook his head and burst out laughing. “No. He let you sit on the motorcycle,” my husband corrected our child.

“Oh, thank all the gods,” I muttered. “I know Saint is having some kind of midlife crisis, but…”

“What’s a midlife crisis?” Meryk asked, and I paled again.

“What else did you do?” I pressed.

“Saint has a new friend,” Jace offered, and my brow rose.

“Oh?” I mused with interest. “Do tell.”
