“You made her mad,” I warned.

“I always make her mad,” he reminded me.

“True.”

Through the majestic marble foyer we walked and into the west wing, toward Jace’s study, but when he closed us inside and moved to pour me a glass of wine, I refused it, taking a seat instead, my hands twirling nervously.

“Uh-oh,” he muttered. “Why do I feel like this is bad news? You’re leaving again? For how long? Where are you going?”

I tipped my head back and smiled at him, shaking my head. “No. I’m not going anywhere. Not for a while.”

Confused, he set his glass down and joined me, taking the high-backed chair at my side.

“Why not? Did something happen in Ironhelm? Is it…?” He let the question hang, but I shook my head again with more vehemence.

“NO! No, it’s not bad news, Jace.”

I reached for his hands and placed them on my stomach, waiting for him to understand what I was trying to tell him. For a few seconds, he merely stared at me, but then his eyes widened.

“Oh! Oh, gods. Meryk is going to have a sibling?”

I nodded, my shoulders sinking as I let out a little laugh. “Yeah. Come the spring, I believe. I’ll have Cirilla do a chart.”

Jace’s eyes glazed over, and he embraced me tightly, raining kisses over my head and face, shaking his head in disbelief.

“Oh, I’m so happy, Elix. Thank you!”

Another laugh bubbled up inside me. “I’m fairly sure I didn’t do this myself,” I teased, nuzzling my nose to his.

“Thank me, then!” he laughed, pressing his cheek to mine. “You have made me so happy!”

“I know the feeling, my love,” I murmured, my lips meeting his as my eyes closed.

Happy, safe, secure… and with family. A real family.
