But for now, Elix was alone in the north wing, and I caught scent of her at the far end of the hallway. The delicate cherry and vanilla fragrance stirred something inside me, but I remembered she was an irritant, not an arousal, and shoved aside the pleasant scent.

Inhaling, my good mood diminished slightly, but I was determined to be in and out in minutes.

I decided to feel her out with this meeting and see how to play it.

I rapped on the door.

“Who is it?” came the raspy but feminine voice through the thick wood, a definitive nervousness edging her words.

“It’s the king.” Slowly, the door opened, revealing the dark entranceway. The aroma of her succulent, cherry-laden soapfilled my nostrils, but Elix herself was nowhere to be seen. Confused, I craned my neck inward. “Hello?”

Her head popped around the side of the door, and my smirk faded away, my breath catching at the sight of her brilliant, emerald eyes shining against the dim lighting. Long strands of chestnut hair fell over high cheekbones, long lashes covering the worried stare beneath. Temporarily taken aback by her intense beauty, I found myself speechless.

That’s not Elix. Elix is an unkempt, mouthy brat. This is a goddess!

“H-hi,” she muttered, dropping her gaze toward the floor, her weight shifting from one bare foot to the next. Even her toes were perfect, tiny and sweet, poking out from beneath the flare of her pants, painted in a dazzling sparkle of silver glitter.

“Elix?” I sputtered, stunned that this young vixen could possibly be the same tangled-tressed deviant who used to track mud through the service entrance and drive the head maid insane.

Now she leered at me, squaring her shoulders and stepping out of the shadows entirely to show her lithe but curvy form in a pair of jeans and a simple black tank top. My eyes lingered on the swell of her perfect breasts, the thump of her heart evident along the veins of her slender neck. She was trying to hide it, but she was anxious.

But it wasn’t just her shocking attractiveness that spun my head in circles. An innocent power enshrouded her as if she wasn’t aware of how much voltage she contained coursing through her body. The energy palpitated toward me in waves, physically washing over me.

I saw why Saint was worried about her.

“Yes, I’m Elix,” she agreed with a sigh. “I’m here, Alpha, at your service.”

The sarcasm in her tone bounced me out of the small spell. Regaining my composure, I drew in a breath, finding my confidence again. “Good. It’s been a while. I didn’t recognize you.”

She folded her arms defiantly over her chest and threw her head back to stare at me. “I recognize you,” she replied flatly. “Your face is all over Goldhaven.”

“Well, I am the king,” I reminded her dryly.

“And you don’t let anyone forget it, do you?”

My eyes narrowed slightly, but I didn’t comment on her tone, forgiving her brusqueness as I let myself into the suite, uninvited. “It’s dark in here. You can turn on the lights, you know.”

“Gee, thanks.”

Bristling, I turned and eyed her, but she avoided my stare. I couldn’t take my eyes off her, the curve of her hips, the arch of her ass?—

That’s Saint’s little sister. And you have a party to attend,I reminded myself.

But suddenly, the party seemed less important, and all I wanted was to ensure Elix’s comfort.

“How are you settling in?” I asked cautiously.

“It’s a nice prison,” she retorted. “Thanks.”

My infatuation began to fade with every cutting remark she made, but I was determined to make her smile.

“If you need anything, I can have a maid assigned to you,” I offered on a whim. I hadn’t intended to set her up with a servant, but suddenly, I wanted to do whatever I could for her.

“Yeah, I need something,” she growled, and I nodded.

“Name it,” I offered sweetly, ambling closer. “I want you to be comfortable here.” She threw her head back and glowered at me.

“I need you and my brother to stop treating me like a lost baby and let me live my own damn life.”
