He ambled a bit closer to my room and shook his head. “That’s not really my intention,” he replied slowly. “If it were up to me, I’d let you go, but I can’t really do that, either. I made a promise to your brother, and honestly, Elix, I don’t think he’s wrong.”

“You guys haven’t been friends in years!” I implored him, casting the book aside again. “You could let me leave. We could make up a story or something…”

Jace’s face hardened again. “That’s categorically untrue. Just because we haven’t spent as much time together as we did when you lived here, doesn’t mean I don’t consider Saint my best friend still.”

Now it was my turn to be stunned.

Best friend? Really? I didn’t know he thought that highly of Saint.

I wondered if I was way off base about everything I knew now. Maybe Jace wasn’t such a smug asshole.

“And your brother isn’t wrong, Elix. You do need protection. There will be many after you with bad intentions. Don’t you want to be safe?

“So, your solution is to lock me up?” I fired back. “That’s reasonable.”

He hesitated at the side of the bed. “You’re not a prisoner here. No one ever intended to lock you up. I don’t know where you got that idea from.”

I eyed him through my peripheral vision, not believing him.

“You’re not,” he insisted. “In fact, I’m having a party tonight. Why don’t you come?”

Okay, that I hadn’t been expecting at all. I eyed him in disbelief.

“A party?” I echoed. “For what?”

Jace chuckled. “I don’t need an excuse to have a party. I’m?—”

“The king,” I interjected. “Right.”

His dark eyes flashed, but he didn’t correct me. “If you want to come, it’s starting soon. I have to get down there. I’m already running behind schedule.”

Because of me,I realized.

“Do you want to come?” he asked again.

“My brother is out of town,” I reminded him. “He’s not going to be there.”

“I know,” Jace replied. “I thought you didn’t need a babysitter. Didn’t you just spend ten minutes giving me a diatribe about that?”

I bristled. “I don’t!”

“Good. Then I’ll see you there.” He spun on his heel and marched toward the door. “I trust you can find your own way?”

“I’ll figure it out,” I agreed, unsure if that was true. It had been a long time since I’d been in the palace, and it would take some time to orient myself. Worst-case scenario, I’d ask for directions.

“Good. Don’t dress up. It’s not that kind of party.”

My eyebrows knit into a vee, but before I could ask him anything else, he was gone, leaving me to ponder exactly what kind of party it was.

Slowly, I rose from the bed and headed toward the closet. One of the maids had unpacked all of my meager belongings into the closet already, and I looked through the outfits.

It’s a good thing I don’t have to dress up,I thought worriedly.I have nothing formal here—or anywhere, for that matter.

And why would I? The sister of a construction worker had no reason to wear a ball gown under normal circumstances.

Lucky for me, I wasn’t going to a ball.

I selected a simple but sexy black dress, the one that every female fae had in her closet. It clung to my curves easily, showing off my hips and breasts, my cleavage accented by a gold necklace that brought out the honey hue of my skin.
