“…like last time, Alpha?” the other murmured.

I glanced at her face, the features vaguely familiar. I’d had her before, but she clearly hadn’t been very memorable.

Their nubile bodies rubbed against me as I lounged on the throne, the music throbbing through the ballroom as the party got started, drinks and food flowing while the guests arrived.

“Why don’t we go upstairs?” the blonde fae on my right asked again.

“I just got here,” I replied, waving her and the redhead back.

They were suffocating me and blocking my view of the other beauties who swarmed around my feet, batting their eyelashes, hoping to catch my attention, if only for the evening. Committing myself so early on was hardly my first priority.

“We could come back,” Blondie insisted. “I just want to get you warmed up.”

“I’m warm enough,” I said flatly, holding my hand up to keep her off my arm. In my peripheral vision, I saw the redhead smirk. I’d been with her before and wouldn’t make the mistake of being with her again. She was too loud and dramatic for my tastes, as if she was putting on a show for a camera. It was off-putting.

I nodded toward my nearest guard, Llyodiver, and he immediately understood my unspoken gesture, leading the loud one away as she squeaked in protest, but her cries were drowned out by the music instantly. Her slender form was replaced by a brunette, and I settled back in my throne with my whiskey in hand, sipping with a serene grin on my face, bouncing another female on my knee. It was as if the redhead hadn’t been there at all.

This was the way of my parties, attention endlessly lavished upon me until I ultimately settled on one or two to bring back to my suite. Sometimes three if the mood struck me. But for now, it was time for dancing and eating and flirting, seeing who showed and who dared to ignore my invitations.

My smile froze as a luscious brunette fell into my line of view.

And who is…?

I almost gasped aloud as I realized the answer to my own question before it fully formed in my head, gently removing the fae from my lap as I leaned forward to gape openly at Elix. She had just wandered into the ballroom, apparently, her head still swiveling about as if taking in the décor and size of the area. Despite her attempts to appear cool and collected, I could see she was overwhelmed with the intensity of the party already.

In the tight, ebony dress that left nothing to the imagination, I was again shocked at the effect that Saint’s sister had on me, even from the distance between us.

How could she have grown up so much?!

I still couldn’t reconcile that this sultry woman was the same brat who had once run the palace halls, causing trouble and misbehaving.

Swallowing thickly, I froze in place, part of me wanting to command her closer, part of me wanting to leave her to admire from a distance. She had a drink in hand already, her back to me as she ambled toward the buffet station, and my mind whirled.

Just leave her alone,a logical part of me warned. But keep an eye on her?

It wasn’t like me to be so undecided. The stirring in my pants guided me one way, but my mind told me distinctly otherwise.

“Alpha, do you want to dance with me?” someone purred in my ear.

“No,” I growled, brushing her away, my eyes glued on Elix, pulse quickening.

“Oh!” the same fae chuckled, following my stare. “Is that the one who can control the elements? I heard about her. She’s staying here in the palace, isn’t she?”

Paling, I whipped my head toward the speaker. The fair-complexioned brunette smiled innocently at me as I narrowed my eyes. “Who told you that?”

She shrugged. “I don’t know.”

Suspiciously, I glowered at her. “But you know it’s her. How?”

The brunette was nonplussed by my words. “I don’t recognize her, so I thought it might be her. It makes sense, since she’s not from around here.” She cocked her head back and pointed at herself. “Lindy, remember?”

I didn’t care about her name. “I mean, who told you about the fae who could control the elements?” I demanded.

Lindy shrugged again. “Oh… I don’t know. Everyone’s talking about it.”

A twist of emotions washed through me.

She just arrived! How could have anyone found out so fast? Who had Elix been speaking to?
