Aghast, I stared at her. “What’s that supposed to mean?” I choked. “What’s happened at my parties?”

Cirilla held up a hand. “I mean, it seems to be a free-for-all. Since when do you involve yourself with the flirtations of others?”

“When I’ve been tasked with caring for one of them,” I fired back. “You weren’t there, and it wasn’t a mere flirtation, or I would have left it alone. If anything happens to Elix…”

I trailed off and shook my head, but the enchantress wasn’t letting me off the hook so easily.

Cirilla cocked her head. “Yes? If anything happens to the maid’s daughter, what?”

Heat shot through me, and more guardedness spliced through me. “Why are you here, Cirilla?” I growled. “It’s late. You told me the mayor’s kid is fine. What else?”

“You sent for me,” she reminded me, and I flushed, turning away.

“Never mind that now,” I informed her. “That can wait until morning. It’s been a long night.”

“Very well. I’ll check on you in the morning, then.”

“No need. I have plans.”

“With whom?” Cirilla asked, baffled. “Don’t tell me you’re going to meet with the Council of Ministers?”

I stared at her. “I’m still the Alpha King of Goldhaven, Cirilla. I have responsibilities to my kingdom.”

“You let Gullifer handle everything on that front.”

My eyes narrowed, fangs baring as if I were going to shift on her, but Cirilla was nonplussed. “Are you my personal secretary now?”

“No. I’m asking you a question.”

“No, I’m not going to meet with the Council.”

She stared at me expectantly, and I realized she wasn’t going to leave until I told her my intentions.

“If you must know, I’m meeting with Saint tomorrow.”

More confusion crossed over Cirilla’s face. “I thought he was out of town.”

“He is. I think he’s coming home tomorrow, though.”

The enchantress nodded again, but I could tell my behavior was only confounding her. In a small, perverse way, it amused me. Usually, Cirilla could run circles around me with her cleverness, but tonight I was a step ahead.

“Cirilla…” I drawled, enjoying my one-up on her.

“Yes?”

“I want you to locate the book of queenly duties and bring it to me.”

“What?”

“The book of queenly duties,” I repeated. “The list of what is required of the queen?—”

“No, I know what it is,” she interjected. “But why?”

“Because I asked you for it,” I replied sweetly. “Goodnight.”

I ushered her toward the door, enjoying the way the wheels in her head spun at this latest revelation.

If Elix and I are going to do this, we might as well have some fun with it,I thought. And I’m going to make her work a little, too.
