“He’s king because his father was king, and his father’s father, and so on, dating back to the Originals,” I grunted.

So much for Saint talking sense into him.

“It’s a good idea. No one will touch you if they think you’re with Jace.”

“I don’t know if this is going to work out,” I muttered. “He wants me to?—”

“I don’t need to hear the details, Elix. Jace is doing me a huge favor by letting you stay there in the first place,” my brother cut me off. “If he thinks this is the best way to go about things, then that’s what we’ll do. Don’t give him a hard time about it.”

A frown formed over my face, digging deep into my forehead. “And never mind whatIwant?”

“Don’t you want to live a safe, happy life?” Saint snapped. “Stop being such a brat, Elix. It’s not forever. Just do whatever is required of you, and don’t make a fuss. We’ll find you a husband, and then you can live however you want, okay?”

My fingers tightened around my phone, and I ground my jaw, but I stopped myself from trying to plead my case further. “Where are you now?”

“I just got back into Geldon. I’m at the apartment.”

“Must be nice,” I muttered.

“Oh, yeah. I just found a flock of pigeons nesting on the balcony, so I’ve got to clean up bird shit now. It’s heaven.”

My eyes traveled around the luxurious surroundings, and my mood immediately shifted as I recognized how good I had it. Saint was right. I was in a very good position.

“Sorry,” I mumbled. “Maybe you should come and stay here, too. It’s much more comfortable, and they do a better job at hiding the pigeon shit.”

Not that I necessarily needed the extra eyes on me, but I couldn’t deny that I missed my brother. We had been a team for so long, it felt strange not sleeping under the same roof as him now.

“No. I’m fine here, and it’s closer to work for me,” he reminded me. He didn’t say it, but I knew that our mother’s wish to get us out of the palace still lingered with him. She had worked too long and hard to get us out for both of us to return and work for the king again—even if Jace wouldn’t see it that way.

“Just keep your head down and do what you’re told, Elix,” Saint told me again. “I’ll check in when I can.”

“Don’t I always?” I sighed.

“No, you don’t always,” Saint countered. “Which is exactly why you are where you are right now. But it’s different now. Jace won’t put up with your insolence.”

“I’m not insolent!” I cried indignantly.

“See what I mean?” he fired back, and I ground my teeth together. “You can’t help yourself.”

There wasn’t any point in fighting. Nothing I said was going to make Saint see it my way.

“Will you at least fire me a text every day?” I relented.

“I’ll do my best. You know where I am if you need me.”

“Yep.”

“Elix…”

“I said I’d do whatever Jace wanted,” I insisted. “It’s fine.”

“I have enough to worry about without having to worry about you constantly. That’s literally the reason I sent you there in the first place. Please don’t make this harder than it already is for me.”

Shame twined down my spine, and I hung my head. “I know, Saint. I’m sorry. I won’t cause any more problems.”

He exhaled. “It’s not your fault, E. Your powers are just too much, and they’ve only grown more powerful as you’ve gotten older. We’ve always known you needed to be protected. It’s coming to a head now, is all. Be patient. We’ll find you a proper match, and you’ll be living your own life, no strings attached, in no time at all.”

I wanted to believe him, but I didn’t. I had a terrible feeling that I’d just committed to a whole new slew of issues.
