He moved toward the bathroom, and I got busy dressing and preparing for our trip back to Goldhaven. By the time Jace had finished showering, I sat in one of the accent chairs, our bags by the door.

“I will have one of the servants bring the bags downstairs,” I tittered. “I’m not managing those stairs in these heels.”

Jace pulled on his boxers. “Good call.”

I couldn’t help but sneak a peek at his dick one last time, my mind trailing to what would happen when we landed in Ironhelm. He caught me looking and winked. “Don’t worry. You’ll see it again.”

Relief flooded through me.

We left the suite, and Jace instructed the guards to have our bags brought to the car as we headed downstairs to meet the king and queen for breakfast.

Queen Zephyrine sat at the table with an empty plate in front of her, a cup of coffee at her side.

“Good morning!” she called out cheerfully.

“Good morning!” King Cade echoed from behind us, striding into the dining room. “I would ask how you two slept, but I already know—all the servants are gossiping about how you kept them up all night.”

My face burned with humiliation, but Jace beamed widely.

“What, us?” he cooed innocently. “We slept like babies, didn’t we, Elix?”

I sputtered an unintelligible answer as Queen Zephyrine gave her husband a scathing look.

“You’re embarrassing her,” she chided.

King Cade bowed his head contritely as a butler held out a chair for him to sit at the head of the table.

“That wasn’t my intention at all, Miss Elix. My apologies.”

“I-I’m not…” I lied as Jace ushered me toward the table.

“I’m just glad you’re comfortable here,” King Cade went on. “After all that nonsense with Thaddieus.”

I grimaced, and Jace shot him a wary look.

“Cade!” Queen Zephyrine snapped. “What is wrong with you this morning?”

The king seemed genuinely confused that he had said anything wrong, but I waved my hand and forced a smile I didn’t feel. “You and the queen have been beyond gracious. I hope we return the hospitality when you come to Goldhaven.”

“Oh, we are overdue for a trip,” Queen Zephyrine told him.

“Please do come,” Jace agreed, spreading his napkin on his lap. “Although I can’t promise our parties are nearly as much fun.”

King Cade rolled his eyes. “As if your soirees aren’t notorious from coast to coast, Jace,” he snorted.

Jace smiled thinly and cast me a nervous glance. “Well, one’s priorities change as they get older, don’t they?”

I looked away, a spark of jealousy twisting in my gut at the reminder of Jace’s near-orgies, but his sincere response gave me hope.

Does he really feel that way? Is he willing to give it all up? For me? A maid’s daughter?

King Cade looked at his wife and smiled. “They certainly do.”

He reached across the table to take Queen Zephyrine’s hand, and she returned his smile. The pair were very much in love. I stole a glance at Jace, and he was staring right back at me, his dark eyes boring into me.

Could we be this happy together if we stuck it out together? Should we try?

Was Jace asking himself these same questions, or was I deluding myself into believing that this was more than it was?
