“Cirilla!” I grumbled as Elix’s eyes popped open.

“What?!” she and Saint understandably choked in unison.

“What she means,” I interjected smoothly before the enchantress could make things worse, “is that Cirilla is going to help you understand your powers better.”

Excitement colored Elix’s face, and her whole body swung forward, shoulders tensed. “You are?!”

Saint sat back to fold his arms over his barrel chest, eyes narrowing. “What does that entail, exactly?”

“I want a blood sample from each of you to run your DNA,” Cirilla explained. “That way, we can get a better handle on your ancestry, understand where the abilities stemmed from?—”

“Why?” Saint interrupted, staring at his sister in disbelief. “Did you ask her to do this?”

Elix snuck a look at me before answering her brother. “I’ve always wanted to understand how I have these abilities while you don’t, and Mom and Dad didn’t. Yes, I want to know how they came to be.”

“Elix, there’s no reason that you should want to know that,” he insisted, confusing me.

“Why not?” I asked, and Saint glowered at me.

“What difference does it make?” he snapped. “It doesn’t change who she is.”

“No, but it’s a part of her,” I argued.

“You can’t understand because it doesn’t affect you, Saint,” Elix told her brother gently. “Anyway, it’s just a blood test. What’s the big deal?”

“The big deal is that you’re opening a can of worms here that you don’t want to open!”

Elix’s enthusiasm faltered under Saint’s attitude.

“Why would you say that?” she demanded, scowling. “What do you think I’ll find?”

Saint immediately softened as if he heard how he sounded and exhaled deeply. “I just mean that you should leave well enough alone, E. It’s not like you need to find out why you have the powers. The gods gifted you with something. Can’t you leave it at that?”

“No! No, I can’t!”

Saint’s frown returned. “Well, I’m not giving any of my blood, and I really don’t think that you should, either.”

“I can’t believe this!” Elix was on her feet, throwing her hands in the air as she looked at me for help. “Talk some sense into him!”

Saint also stared at me as if he was daring me to argue, and I felt stuck between a rock and a hard place. I hadn’t considered that Saint wouldn’t be on board with this.

“Unbelievable!” Elix snapped, storming away to leave us staring at one another.

“You should support her in this,” I told Saint quietly. “It’s really important to her.”

He eyed me strangely. “I think I know what’s best for my sister,” he retorted, also standing. “And I don’t think I will stay for dinner after all.”

He headed out in the opposite direction as I groaned under my breath.

“Well, that went well,” Cirilla offered with bright sarcasm.

“Just find someone to work with Elix on honing her powers,” I snapped at the enchantress.

“I’ll need four faeries, each a master of their respective elements,” Cirilla said thoughtfully, more like she was talking to herself than me.

“Then find four faeries,” I ordered her, spinning on my heel to retreat to the castle after Elix. “And see how else you can help Elix.”
