“Yes, Alpha,” both guards chorused.

A slight dizziness overcame me at the revelation. “When?”

“A little over an hour ago?” Llyodiver guessed, and his partner nodded in assent.

“And neither of you followed her?!” I snarled. “Or contacted me?”

Llyodiver appeared confused. “I asked if she needed an escort. She said she was going back to the palace car outside.”

I sprinted the rest of the way down the stairs and rushed toward the street, where my car remained along with another palace car at the far end of the road. I hurried toward it, shaking my head in disbelief.

“What are you doing out here?” I hissed at the driver.

“A-Alpha!” he sputtered. “I’m waiting on Miss Elix.”

Cold dread dropped ice chips all through my veins. “When did you last see her?” I rasped.

“When I dropped her off here earlier in the evening,” he replied. “She asked me to wait, but I haven’t heard from her since.”

“She hasn’t come out here?” I insisted.

He shook his head.

Spinning back toward the building, I pulled my phone out of my pants’ pocket and dialed the palace's main gates.

“Has Miss Elix returned to the palace this morning?”

“No, Alpha,” the guard answered, recognizing my voice immediately.

“I want a phone call the second she does.”

“Of course, Alpha.”

I disconnected the call, sweat popping over my forehead as I stopped to catch my racing breath, the horrific realization washing over me in a tsunami.

There would never be a phone call because Elix wasn’t going back to the palace that morning—maybe not ever again.

She was gone.

I had chased her off.
