"Theo, put me down."

He growls wordlessly. Instead of putting me down, he carries me back inside the house, stomping like he's angry. Somehow, he manages to juggle me and kick the door closed at the same time. Only when we're in the living room does he finally put me back on my feet. But not before sliding me down his body. His erection grinds against my center and then my belly.

I feel his eyes locked on my face when I whimper, but I don't look at him. I can't. If I do, I might start crying again. Or beg him to kiss me.

"Um, I should go," I mumble, fidgeting from foot to foot once they're both on the floor.

"No," he says…shouts. "Not until you tell me what the fuck is going on."

"Nothing," I say, staring at the white rug beneath my feet. "Um, I'm really sorry I fell asleep in your bed. I promise it's not something I do often…or ever. I was just tired because my car isn't very comfortable to sleep in, so I sat down for a minute before making the bed. And the next thing I knew, you were waking me up. I swear it won't ever happen aga… Why are you growling at me?"

"What do you mean yourcar isn't very comfortable to sleep in?" he growls, taking a step toward me. His deep voice rises an octave at the end. "You were sleeping in your car?"

"Um…" I back up a step and then another.

He notices and stops stalking toward me. One hand goes to his hair, tugging the dark strands. He winces when he does it.

"Oh my gosh! Your head!" I cry, remembering the knot on the back of it. It wasn't overly large, but it was big enough tobe noticeable. I'm pretty sure that's not a good thing. "What happened?"

"Got in a fight," he grunts. "Stop trying to change the subject."

"You got into a fight?" I gape at him.

"Charlotte. Little one." He tips his head back to look up at the ceiling and takes a deep breath. I think he's searching for patience. Or Jesus. Either is equally as likely. "Why the fuck were you sleeping in your car, baby doll?"

"Because I caught my apartment on fire?"

He tips his head forward to look at me so fast,Iget dizzy. I know he does too because he grimaces and sways on his feet. But he doesn't let that stop him from hitting me with a look hot enough to scorch me. I actually feel the heat and fury as those green eyes lock on me. "You were in a fire?"

"No? I mean, yes?" I huff out a breath. "Sort of. I fell asleep cooking curry and caught the stove on fire. It would have been fine if the fire extinguisher worked, but my landlord is a cheapskate, and it didn't work. So the fire spread. The fire department had to come and put it out. And then he evicted me."

"He evicted you?"

"Yes. Well, he offered to let me stay with him first but he's kind of a creep. I said no, and then he evicted me," I explain. "He gave me ten days to get out, but the fire department said my apartment wasn't safe, so I couldn't stay there. They wouldn't even let me get any of my stuff."

"Charlotte? Stop talking."

"I… Okay," I whisper, snapping my mouth closed. Tears fill my eyes again, but I blink them back, refusing to cry in front of him again. I've done enough damage for one day. No. I've done enough damage for the year. "Um, if you'll just let me get my phone out of the kitchen, I'll go."

"Where?"

"I don't know. Uncle John's?"

"He's in Vancouver."

"His house isn't."

"You aren't staying there alone," Theo growls, narrowing his eyes on me. "You don't even have your car."

"I could call an Uber if I had my phone."

He growls at me again.

"Stop growling at me!" I cry, flinging my hands up. "I'm sorry I fell asleep in your bed. If you want to fire me for it, fine. I understand. But you're stressing me out."

He opens his mouth to say something and then snaps it shut again. For a full five-count, he just stares at me. And then he chuckles. "Seems only fair since you've been stressing me out since I met you, Charlotte."

"I have not," I gasp.
