"Not a chance."

"You're so annoying. Why are you calling me?"

"I have a proposition for you."

"What proposition?"

Christ, I love the little thread of suspicion in her voice, like she knows I'm up to something and is just waiting for me to drop a bomb on her.

"Spend the day with me."

"Our date isn't until tonight."

"It's a Valentine's Day date," I say, emphasizing the wordday. And then I stop for a moment, impressed with myself and my quick thinking. Kelsey definitely doesn't give me enough credit. "That means you have to spend the whole day with me."

"The whole day? That was not in the contract."

"You signed a contract?" I blink, shocked.

"Fine, no. I made that part up. But no one told me it was an all-day thing!"

"They must have forgotten," I lie, crossing my fingers. Once I figure out how to make her fall in love with me, I'll come clean. Don't want my girl thinking she's in love with a liar. Fuck that. I'll always be honest with her…except for right now. But this is an exigent circumstances situation, so it doesn't count.

"What are we going to do all day?"

"You could come home with me…"

"Ha! No way."

"Just checking," I mutter. It was worth a shot. "I'm taking you on a tour of the arena."

"Really?"

"Yeah, I figured you might like to see what we see."

"I need two hours."

"For what?"

"Girl things. Mind your business, Davies."

"Yes, ma'am," I say, grinning. Fuck, I think I already love her.

"You're pretty good atthis getaway driving thing," Laney murmurs from the passenger seat. She looks beautiful today. Her hair is plaited into a braid and then twisted up into a bun. Little pieces float freely around her face. Her blue eyes are bright, and her cheeks are pink again. She's dressed in a pair of distressed jeans and a black top with lace on it and an oddly shaped bottom that has a name I can't remember. Her red coat has big bows over the buttons.

"I've had a lot of practice," I murmur, whipping in and out of traffic to lose any paparazzi that might have followed us. Kelsey managed to lure a few of them away by announcing that Gray is the next Win a Date candidate, but there were still a handful out there when I pulled up.

If they followed us, they're gone now.

"They really follow you everywhere?" Laney asks, turning slightly to peer out the back window.

"Not as much as they used to follow me," I mutter, moving into the right lane so we can get off the interstate at the next exit. The minivan behind me hits the horn like I cut him off or something. I swear, people see sports cars and automatically assume you drive like shit. "I don't give them much to do off the ice."

"You don't date."

"You been keeping up with me, cutie pie?" I ask, grinning at the thought of her being interested enough to know I don't date. Normally, it annoys the hell out of me when people know shit about my personal life. Not this time. I love knowing she's been keeping tabs on me.

"No," she says, spluttering. The pink tint to her cheeks deepens.
