Kris doesn't say anything, but he doesn't have to say it. He already knows.
Aweek later, westep onto the ice in our old jerseys as a team for the first time in years. The entire arena erupts in a roar, drowning out everything as they scream, shout, and go crazy. I look at Kellan on my left and then Gray on my right, my heart in my throat.
Fucking hell. I forgot how good this shit feels.
We walk to center ice together, no one saying anything. Several others join us; players from previous rosters called to stand in attendance as MacAthie is given the award he deserves. I scan the crowd while the GM gives a speech, looking for Jamie.
Just like old times, she and the girls are behind the player box, seated side by side. She meets my gaze, the pride in her eyes obvious.
My heart rolls over in my chest, entirely new sections of it falling to her. Every day, she finds new ways to make me fall for her. A single look, a single touch, and I'm hers all over again. Just like I have been for the last eleven years. Our story started on this ice back then, just like this. But it's different now. She isn't off-limits any longer, the gossip reporter I can't touch.
She's my wife. My soul.
And I'm the lucky motherfucker who gets to take her home at the end of the night, every night.
I keep my eyes on her as Kris accepts the microphone, leading us as our captain one final time. I don't hear what he says as he thanks Coach for his years of dedication. The words don't matter. What matters is right here…the family Coach and Kelsey shaped us into on the ice, and everything we've grown into since. And that? That's pretty fucking incredible.
