Page 62 of Playing for Keeps

I damn near swooned when he kissed my hand and called me beautiful. Maybe he's just playing me, but what woman doesn't want to hear a man who looks like him say they're beautiful? I'm tall and curvy, two things a lot of men find anything but attractive. I want this one to find me attractive though…and that's a problem. I've never had a client who made me weak in the knees just by smiling at me. Working with him could get awkward, especially if he learns about my little crush.

But I need this to work out if I'm ever going to open my firm. So my little crush will just have to stay a secret. We'll keep this strictly professional, and everything will work out in the end.

Right?

Crap. Maybe I should set some ground rules.

"We can fix it," I say, praying I don't live to regret it. When he flashes those dimples in a relieved smile, I quickly add, "But it's not going to be easy, Gray. You're going to have to work to give them something else to focus on other than your disastrous date."

"I can do that," he says, leaning closer to me. His minty breath washes across the side of my face, making my stomach quiver. "I'll be on my best behavior, Camila Gomes. Scout's Honor." He holds his hand up with his thumb and pinky finger down.

"You can't use the Scout sign unless you were a Scout, Gray," Kelsey says.

"I was a Scout."

"You are so full of it. You were not a Boy Scout."

"Why are you still here?" Gray grumbles, glaring at her.

"Because this is my office."

He looks around as if only just realizing we're still in her office. "Oh," he mutters, shaking his head. "Right. We should go somewhere else then."

"You have practice in an hour," Kelsey reminds him, smirking. I think she enjoys messing with him. He gets so grumpy about it, but in an adorable way. I don't know how she handles a whole team by herself.

"Shit," Gray says, turning back to me. "I have practice soon, but I'd love to take you to dinner tonight."

"Why?" I ask, caught off guard.

He eyes me for a minute like he's trying to decide what to say and then he shrugs. "Because you're fucking beautiful and I'd like to talk to you without Kelsey here to bust my balls about it," he says. "And also so we can come up with a gameplan for Operation Save Gray."

"Busting your balls is my favorite source of entertainment," Kelsey complains. "And did you seriously name this Operation Save Gray?"

"Yes." His brows furrow. "Why? Should we call it something else?" He looks at me again. "You can call it whatever you want. We can pick a name on our date."

"Date?" I squeak. Yes, squeak. Like a freaking twelve-year-old girl meeting her crush.

Kelsey clamps a hand over her mouth, but not before I hear her giggle. I'm killing her.

"I don't date clients," I manage to say to Gray.

His face falls. "Seriously?"

I bob my head in a frantic nod, slightly terrified I might actually change that rule for him if he gives me that puppy dog look again. I am so in over my head here. And I'm not even surehow it happened or when, for that matter. One minute, we're talking about his image and the next, he's asking me on a date.

"I could fire you," he suggests.

I gape at him for a long moment, trying to figure out if he's serious or if he's just joking with me. But then I catch sight of the horrified look on Kelsey's face and realize he means it.

My stomach drops to my toes as disappointment fills me. I should have known the charming gentleman was an act. He played the role a little too well. Of course, the first guy I like in…well, ever, would turn out to be a jerk.

"I haven't even agreed to work for you yet," I snap, glaring at him.

"Jesus, Gray," Kelsey says, crossing her arms over her chest to glare at him too. "What is wrong with you?"

He opens his mouth to answer her and then snaps it closed again. "I feel like this is a trick question and anything I say is liable to get me shivved," he says, eyeing both of us warily.

Kelsey sniffs.
