“There are other jobs in the casino.”

“Otherjobs?” My lips form a thin line.

“Are you just going to repeat everything I say?”

Every single bone in my body is begging me to repeat what he’s just said in a mocking tone. It’s a fight I almost lose. “Maybe,” I reply instead. “Why would I want to work foryou?”

“If I remember correctly, you’ve been desperate to work for me from the beginning. And you actually did. The casino?”

“I wasnotdesperate.” I cross my arms, defiant.

“Mmm-hmm.”

“Anyway, I still have nowhere to stay.”

“You can stay here.”

This time I do cackle. Hysterically. When his face remains stoic, I wipe the tears away and squash down the need to commit myself to an institution. “You’re serious.”

He shrugs.

“Yeah, buddy. I don’t think so.”

“It’s a big place.”

Why is he so insistent all of a sudden? Makes me want to see how far I can push this. “I think… I should probably just leave town, like you wanted me to in the first place.”

“You can’t.”

“Why not?”

“It’s complicated.”

He’s annoying me now. “Uncomplicate it for me, then.”

“If you agree to stay and work for me.”

I take a deep breath. I suppose I could stay with Mel. And what job does he want me to do? Server? Or maybe bartender…and, more importantly—“How much will you pay me?”

“More than you got dancing.”

“How much more?” I cock my head to the side expectantly.

“Double.”

I snort. “No.”

“No?”

“I want triple.”

“Fine.” Holy shit, he agreed.

“And—”

“Don’t push it,Stevie.” His lips form a thin line.

“And I want all the dancers to get their jobs back.”
