He opens it, his phone pressed against his ear as he motions for me to put his food on the desk.

“You can head home,” Dante says, covering the microphone on his phone. “Thanks for getting the food.”

I smile, almost feeling bad, but I think better of it. I walk outside and grab my bag, deciding to leave my wet things in the staff room until tomorrow in case he opens his bag of food straight away.

I know I’ve done the right thing when I hear an angry roar as something crashes to the floor.

“Get back here, now!” he bellows after me.

I yelp. Taking off into a run. “See you tomorrow, boss man!” I shout, turning a corner.

“You’ll pay for this!” Is the last thing I hear as I take the stairs two at a time, laughing. I only wish I could have seen his face when he opened the box containing his food and found it covered in ketchup.

I basically skip all the way back home. I most likelywillpay for it tomorrow. But that’s a future Alessa problem.

ALESSA

Ihave a plan. I’m just going to tell him it was a mixup. It wasmylunch I had left on his desk by mistake. I’ll apologise, and that will be the end of it. He’ll understand.

Maybe…

I pace in front of the staff entrance, trying to convince myself Dante won’t kill me for what I pulled yesterday, but since the joy of annoying him had worn off within fifteen minutes of getting back home, I’m not so sure.

“Stalling, are we?”

I yelp, jumping in place and clutching my chest. “You scared me half to death!”

“Did I?” Dante’s face is stoic as his chocolate brown eyes turn cold. I take a small step back.

“Look, about the food yesterday.”

“What about it?” He moves closer to me.

“It was an honest mistake. I must have given you mine without realising.”

“Hmmm.”

I swallow. “Surely you won’tkillme for one teeny tiny slip up?” I laugh awkwardly.

“Won’t I?”

“You’d lose an excellent assistant. And good assistants are super hard to come by these days,” I nod.

“I guess I’ll hold off then,” he says, then turns to open the door, leaving me stunned. Well, that was a lot easier than I thought. “You coming?”

I walk past him and up the stairs until we reach his office, where I stand confused once again.

“Something wrong, Stevie?” Dante says sweetly. The tone of his voice lets me know I’m well and truly fucked. Whatever he’s got in store for me, I think I’d rather take death if it’s still on the table.

“Am I fired?” I ask, trying to figure out if it was the little program I coded or the ketchup all over his food that sealed my fate.

“Now, why would you think that?” He crosses his arms in front of his chest.

“My desk?” I point at the empty space where my desk was just yesterday.

“Oh, that? I thought you might have been a bit cramped yesterday.”
