Troy sighed as he observed the room with quiet wisdom, twisting one of his almond-brown locs between his rich black fingers. His amber eyes landed on me expectantly. “Fred informed us of your guest.”

Blake marched toward the mantel with an apricot-tinted hand in his midnight black hair. Icy blue eyes scoped the room, landing on the kitchen doorway. “Yes, yourguest.”

The alphas had fascinatingly opposite personalities. Since my arrival, I’d noticed their leadership style was resolute, done as a singular unit. Yet many times, I had witnessed their heads slam together like stubborn goats. Troy was usually amused by it while Blake was mildly annoyed by it.

Together, they created a phenomenal team despite their disagreements. I had immense respect for them both and wanted to do everything in my power to prove my loyalty to them.

Memphis meowed loudly from the kitchen.

Anita giggled. “Why are you trying to climb my shoulders? You never do that.”

My hackles rose. “He’ll get his scent all over her.”

Troy spared me a curious grin. “That’s a fascinating way to put it.”

“Oh, I just meant that—” I tousled my hair. It wasn’t styled with any product today. That was unusual for me. “I’m not used to having a cat around who isn’t a shifter.”

“I’m sure it’s a challenge you rise above each day,” Troy praised.

Blake snorted. “I’m surprised you haven’t tried to eat him.”

Anita appeared in the doorway with a pale face and eyes as round as plates. “Liam, who are your guests?”

Blake started to speak when Troy stepped forward with a friendly grin and an open hand. “Good evening, Miss Anita. We meet at last.”

She hesitantly shook his hand. “Hi. Nice to meet you. I think.”

“I’m Alpha Troy. This is Alpha Blake,” he said as he gestured to the grouchy alpha standing next to the mantel. “We’re the leaders of the Hayden and Bravecrest packs.”

“So, you’re two separate packs?”

Blake shook his head. “We’re a united pack. However, we kept our respective names.”

Anita grinned while holding out her hand to Blake. “Well, it’s nice to meet you, Alpha Blake. You look like a biker.”

Blake raised his eyebrows as he shook her hand. “I own a couple of bikes.”

“He owns five,” Troy said with a whimsical grin. “But I suppose saying he only has a couple of bikes means Veronica will allow him to purchase a few more.”

Anita looked confused. “Veronica?”

“My mate,” Blake said. He motioned to the kitchen. “Which is why we’re here. We heard the news.”

That gorgeous woman looked utterly overwhelmed as Troy and Blake ushered her intomykitchen. Though I couldn’t argue with my alphas, I did my best to keep up—and keep their paws off her hands and shoulders.

Alphas were touchy shifters. It wasn’t at all a creepy or meaningless exchange. On the contrary, it was precisely how shifters acted within their packs. We were creatures of warm comforts and we welcomed hugs openly. To trade touch with an alpha was to receive the highest form of affection.

However much it was a compliment, I felt the need to sit close to Anita, to have my shoulder touching her shoulder so she knew I was right next to her. And when she flashed me a grateful grin, I felt a lot better about the alphas sitting across from us with such stern expressions.

Even Troy’s features were arranged formally in an expression he typically used when he was addressing the pack at a meeting.

Troy folded his hands together. “Congrats on the pregnancy, Miss Anita.”

She smiled tightly. “Thank you, Alpha Troy.”

Blake licked his lips as his brows furrowed together. “As much as the news is wonderful, we’re concerned that Liam didn’t alert us of your presence sooner.”

She stiffened. “Is that bad?”
