He grinned. “That’s right, baby. Together.”

Beaufort Care Clinic for Catswasn’t open yet when we pulled into the parking lot. A silver Mazda was the only other car around. That would be Sterling, here an hour before opening. After unlocking the door with my key, I tugged Liam inside, noticing his discomfort almost immediately.

“I’m sorry, sweetie,” I told him. “This won’t take long. You don’t ever have to come back here if you don’t want to.”

“No, it’s fine,” he assured me. He took my hand. “I’m here for the long haul. Okay?”

I nodded with an emotional grin, feeling the tears coming back.

Ugh, not today. I didn’t need to be a mess today. I needed to get shit done today so that we weren’t fumbling when the baby arrived. Whenever that would happen. Apparently, shifters had some magical DNA that could make a pregnancy like mine—a human carrying a shifter baby—a bit unpredictable.

I worriedly peeked through the previous day’s clipboard list. “At least Patricia isn’t mad at us.”

“She understands pack traditions.”

“I just wish we could make sense of my bloodwork.”

That was the weirdest part of my morning, finding out that some latent magic had been discovered in my blood. How my blood had carried it around, or how the hell I’d been exposed to magic at all, was a complete mystery to me.

But maybe it had something to do with those weird memories I couldn’t access.

I squeezed Liam’s hand. “One thing at a time, right?”

“That’s right, baby.”

I heard a crash from the back. Concerned, I went to the door next to the welcome desk and punched in my code. Another crash came from my office. I darted down the hallway and skittered to a halt in front of my open office door.

Sterling was standing in the middle of spilled paperwork. He spotted me, lit up with glee, and then blushed hard enough to turn his face into a ripe tomato. “Boss—” He looked at Liam. “Boss’s…friend?”

I laughed. “Boss’sboyfriend.”

My assistant glanced between us fast enough to give me motion sickness. “Is that what you’ve been doing?”

“Remember when I told you that my past chased me to this town?”

Sterling nodded.

“Well, my past caught up with me,” I explained carefully. “That’s all fixed now. It won’t be a problem.”

Despite the reassurance, he looked concerned. I didn’t blame him for that.

I stared at the mess on the ground. “What are you doing in here, anyway?”

“Mrs. Drake.”

I groaned. “What happened now?”

“She adopted another cat. I was trying to get Cayenne’s files together with the new cat, Paprika.”

“That woman is a nightmare.”

Liam chuckled. “Need me to handle that?”

I turned with a shocked expression. “No.”

“I’m kidding, babe.”
