“Two.When I went to check on him, he was in that position, and every time I checked after that.”

So whoever murdered Lawry had used Mason’s bathroom break as his moment to strike. When Mason went to the bathroom, he broke into the control room and tampered with the footage. That gave them a few minutes to question and murder Lawry, and while Mason was back on his rounds, the killer had fixed the footage.

“Thank you, Mason.”

“I swear, Detective Weston, I had nothing to do with his murder.”

“I trust you, Mason.” Jameson clapped him on the shoulder.“I think someone used your bathroom break as a way to break in and do the deed.”

Mason’s face drained of color.“Oh no.I’m going to be fired for this.I can’t be fired. My girlfriend and I are about to have a baby.”

Jameson held up a hand to halt Mason’s tirade.“You won’t be fired.Maybe a reprimand, but this could have happened to anyone.Or it could have been worse, and the person would have used deadly means to get to the witness.”

“I hadn’t thought of it that way.”

“You’re free to go, Mason, just make sure to fill out a report and leave it on my desk before you leave.”

“Yes, sir.Thank you, sir.” Mason hustled out of the room as if Jameson was going to change his mind, or probably the fact they were standing a few feet from the body.

“Rosgen,” he said, coming up to the investigator and whispering to him.“Time of death was between twelve-fifty and one-fifteen AM.” Enough time for Mason to leave for the bathroom and return.

“I’ll update the report. We’re almost finished in here too, then we’ll get the body to the morgue.”

“Has anyone informed Lucy yet?”

“No.”

“Don’t worry about it, I’ll take care of it.”

Rosgen looked relieved. No one ever liked making that phone call.Jameson had done it enough times, he was desensitized to it.He also wanted a chance to speak to Lucy himself.See if Lawry had talked to her about his boss.

“Detective Weston.”

Jameson turned to see who called him.It was Bruce who worked in evidence. This couldn’t be good.“Yes?”

“I just wanted to inform you, sir.” He turned his body and lowered his voice so only Jameson could hear him.“The evidence room has been broken into.A case drawer has been opened, but so far I can’t see what has been taken.I didn’t know if it might be related to this case, but I thought you should know.”

“Which case drawer?” Jameson asked, but he already had an idea which one it was.His luck was never that great.

“OR-2607.”

“Thank you, Bruce.Go ahead and report it.”

“Yes, sir.”

Whoever Lawry had been working for was cleaning up.In the case file was supposed to be the file folder Brooklyn had.The one currently locked up in his drawer.

This was more than just a murder. It was a message.Which meant Brooklyn nor Morgan were safe.He had to call Drake and warn him.

Chapter 8

“Drake.” Jameson called his brother as soon as he left the crime scene and headed back upstairs. He used a small break room for the call, not wanting to be overheard.

“Jameson.” His brother didn’t sound happy to hear from him.He just hoped he hadn’t interrupted something between Drake and Brooklyn. They were young and in love. He’d seen the doe-eyes they’d given each other more than once while he’d interviewed them.

Don’t get him wrong. He liked Brooklyn, and he was happy she and his brother ended up together, though that hadn’t been the plan when he’d assigned her to him for protection.

Drake had been living like a hermit in his cabin in the middle of nowhere since he was medically discharged from the military.Jameson had hoped giving him a purpose again would help.He hadn’t accounted for them to fall in love.
